Indooroopilly - Brisbane Suburb Guide

Indooroopilly (or Indro as it is called by the locals) is a great little suburb with a real mix of grand old homes, contemporary apartments and exclusive river front properties.  

It is only 6km to the city centre. The suburb covers 7.5 km². At the 2011 Australian Census the suburb recorded a population of 11,670.

Indooroopilly borders the edges of Mt Coot-tha and the very popular Brisbane Botanic Gardens on the north west and with the Brisbane River on the south-west.

It has excellent transport with both bus and train networks and lots of shopping options with the Indooroopilly shopping centre located at its heart and a few restaurant strips to catch a bite to eat. The residents are also a cosmopolitian mix of professionals, students, young couples and families. The terrain is a bit hilly and this adds to its character.

Indooroopilly is near the University of Queensland campuses density and very popular with the students who go there.  

Transport

Moggill Road is the main thoroughfare, connecting Indooroopilly to Toowong and the city via Coronation Drive (inbound), and Chapel Hill and Kenmore (outbound). The Western Freeway also serves the suburb. 

Indooroopilly is well connected by public transport. There is a bus interchange adjoining the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, where Brisbane Transport operates services to the CBD, university and other western suburbs. 

Indooroopilly railway station provides frequent services to the Brisbane CBD, Ipswich, Richlands and Caboolture.  The train station is a central hub where express trains run to the city; so there are more trains than at other stops closer to the city. The ride takes about 10 mins to the city on an express train.

A lot of people don't bother owning a car in this wonderful suburb.

Recreation

There is a café and restaurant precinct along Station Road between the shopping centre and railway station as well as to the east of the railway station. 

There are two cinema complexes in Indooroopilly, the Eldorado cinemas on Coonan Street and Event Cinema Megaplex inside Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. This cinema complex once had 8 cinemas, now it boasts 16. It is the major cinema complex in the Western Suburbs. 

Indooroopilly youth organisations include the Indooroopilly Scout Group including Rovers  and Indooroopilly Girl Guide District. Indooroopilly is also home to one of Brisbane's oldest Soccer Football Clubs, Taringa Rovers. Let's not forget that Queensland premier golf club is there. The Indooroopilly Golf Club [8] is a 36-hole championship course offering members and guests a variety of competition and social golf.

There is an unofficial dog park/meeting point at the Indooroopilly High School Oval; lots of dog walkers about 6.30am and about 5pm at night. Make sure you take your own bags and ball. Lots of dogs there and they are all very social. 

Shopping

Having the largest retail and entertainment precinct west of the Brisbane CBD, Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, is a major drawcard and is surrounded by many retailers, and small businesses.

Indooroopilly Shopping Centre hosts over 600 specialty stores and is the largest shopping centre in the western suburbs of Brisbane and contains the only Myer store in that region. Station Road Dining and Event Cinemas trade outside of these hours.

The food court in the main shopping centre has loads of options; we would highly recommend having high tea at Fleet Street Cafe (part of the Pig and Whistle Pub adjoining the main shopping centre). The Pig and Whistle is open late on weeknights and weekends for meals and drinks and has a smoking section outside. Serving a great choice of English food, their Barnsley Lamb Chops are too die for.

Indooroopilly State School - Primary - Prep - Yr 6 - (excellent school) government

Indooroopilly State High School - Yr 7 - Yr 12 - (excellent school) government

Ambrose Treacy College - Yr 4 - Yr 12 - Catholic College fees approx $12,000

Brigidine College - Yr 7 - Yr 12 - Catholic College (girls only) fees approx $8,000 pa.

Indooroopilly (4068) is a suburb of Brisbane, Southern Suburbs, Queensland. It is about 6 kms from QLD's capital city of Brisbane. Indooroopilly is in the federal electorate of Ryan.

In the 2011 census the population of Indooroopilly was 11,670 and is comprised of approximately 50.9% females and 49.1% males.
