Babies and Toddlers

Hi there

DO you think the transition will be easier for toddlers? We have an 19 month old and when we arrive might be anything up to 2 and a half. She goes to nursery here in the UK 3 days a week and loves it there. She is quite close to her mum and most of the time doesnt like being in new situations unless either me or dad are there.

Does anyone recommend starting her in a new nursery/pre school to make friends when we get there?

Also when will she start school?

Hi ya,

I would say it would be easier for toddlers, their social network is not as tight as an older kids, I have a toddler who is 2 next week and I think he would settle in by far the easiest in comparrison to my other kids aged 15,13 and 8. Im not really sure when little uns start Kindie in Oz but I think there will be plenty of play groups about. Dont worry Im sure your little one will be fine and surprise you by how quickly she can adjust. xx

She will be fine, wont even notice you have moved to the other side of the world.

Child care is something you have to pay for here although there are playgroups (with mummy in attendance) if you look around. Child care centres can be hard to get into though, especially the good ones.

Formal schooling - depends on the state as to the degree to which they support early childhood education and what access there is. Our ed system is good in that when kids are about to turn 4 (or have turned 4 already - there are all sorts of weird cut off dates) they are entitled to 15 hours a week of preschool which is free. Then they begin full time education when they are 5 or about to turn 5 (before 30 April in our case). I know that other states dont have quite such a good scheme and often full time school is the first entry into education.
