Younger OnesA forum especially for teenagers and the younger ones making the big move down under. Its here to discuss all things with migrating and living in Australia.
Hi Dan,
We stayed at Biggera waters when we went for our reccie, about 40 mins from Brisbane and 20 mins from Surfers. The company are providing our rental for the first 6/8 weeks so I am not sure where we will be based. It will give us a chance to settle and have a look around. Once I speak to new employers I am sure we will be sent in right direction.
We leave on Oct 2nd , going to Dubai and Singapore and will land in Brisbane on the 9th. I do not start work until 20th Oct but will call and see new boss anyway. He might give me a sub you never know.
How are your plans, Has Mom found any more info on the midwife scene. At least she seems keen now.
She was very keen and now she is feeling reluctant because she thinks that the process will be very stressful and that there is so much to think about so she is not sure she'll be able to cope... also the idea of settling in to a new life is daunting for her...
Can you give any more info on the cost of living/house prices form your reccie??? I know I was in Oz only two months ago but I never gave prices my full attention - which I regret now! Hope you can get the house shifted in this terrible market!
Best wishes, Dan.

By the way... we have researched quite a lot on the midwife front and there are plenty of jobs so that should be fine...

the houses are fantastic. For the equivalent of 250k you get nearly twice the size of house you would get in England. The rooms seem bigger and especially on the new estates they are building there is a room for all occasions. (Rumpus, media, open plan and the bedrooms have walk in robes so there is no clutter) it just seems a total better way of living. My only concern is for the wife driving. She gets lost in Birmingham and she has been driving 20 years.so I don't know what she will do there but she is up for the challenge. The cost of food apparently is on a par with here but the quality is better but at least when a stranger says hello over there you it comes across as genuine, it would not happen here.( it used to though)
I'll just have to persuade, persuade, persuade and hope!
Good luck to you all and I hope Annette's driving goes ok.
Regards from a very jealous Dan

Another thing I forgot to mention that is a big concern and holdback for my parents is the cost of getting to Oz. We would definately be looking to use a migration agent and the thought of their fees worries my parents! Do you mind me asking how much you paid for such fees, or is that included in job sponsorships normally, or atleast an idea of how much fees for us would be...
Thanks again for this much needed advice,
Dan

Yes the company are picking up the tab but the cost was $3300 all inclusive. Once I get there and if the company like me they said they will help me get PR which I will have to pay for. If we would have flown in Aug or Sept it would have cost over 1k each but waiting till October it has gone down to £686 each. All adults now once over 12 years of age.
Annette and me made the decision to go for it and if it takes all our savings then so be it but if it works, it is money well spent. I have to go for it now as I am 45 next year.
Hope it works out for you all and that it is money well spent - you regret things that you never did so atleast you are giving it a go.
Regards,
Dan
