We'd never visited before emigrating here three years ago, but we've never regretted it and never wanted to go back to the UK. I haven't been anywhere other than here and Melbourne so I can't compare, but I can tell you what we think about it here. For what it's worth!
I knew little about Adelaide before we came - couldn't be bothered to look into it;just left it to my OH (1. Because I trust him 2. Not for nothing am I called 'Lazy Cow' ), but I had seen a DVD showing the wonderful places we'd have access to. Well, I didn't think it was quite like that when we arrived. Tired and with only expectations built on one DVD to go on(), I thought some areas we went through were full of ugly, American, boxy and temporary looking shops and car lots.
Once I relaxed and opened my eyes properly, I realised that Adelaide, and her suburbs, are full of individual houses, trees, reserves and sunlight. The suburbs roll into one another purely down to need. Even in the short time we've been here we've seen huge housing estates cover what were green (in winter!) fields. Progress I guess.
As for lifestyle, Adelaide has everything. People say that there is little for the young, but I don't get that. Obviously larger states can offer more, but it seems ok to me. There is a big music scene, and most of the bands that tour come here too. We have all the basics like ice-skating, swimming, outdoor cinemas, beautiful beaches, whales (July/August mainly), dolphins etc. Not for nothing are we called the Festival State and sometimes we have to decide which to go to because we simply can't afford everything. We enjoy taking part in the City-Bay walks, the Million Paws walk, FOOTY!!!*, and love the Adelaide Show. People are welcoming and helpful (or they have always been to us) and eager to share their state. Shops are varied, there are plenty of markets and small 'individual' shops representing many different cultures and lifestyles.
I know there is an active ex-pat community here, and they look very helpful and welcoming. The sister site PiA is good as is Adelaide-Brits.com (there! I've said it and will now wash my mouth! Sorry Tim!)
Of course that's just my opinion and what springs to mind as I write. Other people might have a different take on what I see. For example some people feel that the Adelaide Show is a tawdry greed-fest for the kids, but I think one of the charms of Adelaide is her people's ability to see wonder in what people spoilt with theme parks etc of the UK might see as less than wonderous. IMHO, to fit in you have to leave everything you knew and look with the eyes of an Adelaidean. (OMG I'm making myself feel queasy...must be this cold I have at the mo. Think I'd better close now hey?)
TTFN then :)

PS. It's rainy and yuk at the moment and even with my Crows fever and gaggle of kids I'm not feeling too eager today....
PPS. Please note I am only talking about Adelaide and not SA as a whole.
I'm not really mad; I just didn't notice that your post was in the 'Younger Ones' forum....and I can't bear to delete the whole post as it took me ages as I can only type with two fingers - and even then it's a 'one at a time' thing!
Anyway, it's your own fault as you sounded so sensible and grown-up!
Love, the Stoopid Cow.
Adeide is fab, but I'm sure Brisbane is brilliant too!
