Younger OnesA forum especially for teenagers and the younger ones making the big move down under. Its here to discuss all things with migrating and living in Australia.
Hello,
My mum and dad are talking about moving to Australia but I'm really nervous! I'm only 9 and I was just wondering if any of you can tell me what it is like on the Gold Coast?
Can you also tell me what the schools are like , what sort of things are there to do because I like to play out all the time and you can't here in Leeds because it is always raining !! What is the weather like over there all year? Does it rain and is it windy. Are there any young people who will talk to me?

Hi Erika,
we live in Perth, I have a daughter 13 and a son 8, they both say that school is really fun here. My son loves school in aus, he enjoys the fact they get to do experiements in science instead of just watching the teacher do them. Recess (play time) is apparently wicked because you get to play on equipment like in a play ground or kick a ball, most schools have big grass areas. If you like sport then you're going to be spoilt for choice there's load to choose from. At the moment, my son plays Basketball (which he'd never played before) and soccer. My daughter goes horseriding. There are netball, swimming, hockey, gym clubs. The weather in general is pretty good, yesterday it rained all day where we live but the day before was like a summer day in England, my son loves playing outside and gets lots of time to do that here (much more than in England). What else can I tell you? ... Oh, making friends, My son and daughter, although a little bit nervous at starting a new school didn't have any problems at all and made friends really quickly and easily. Becuase Australia gets lots of new people coming all the time, my daughter said that you're not actually the new kid for very long. Usually people love your accent and although I can't really tell, everyone says that my son now sounds Australian.
I won't say don't worry, because moving to a new country is a little scary (for mums and dads too), but I'm sure that when you get here you'll enjoy it like my two have.
Luv Ali

Hi Erika
Can't really tell you what it's like to live in Oz but sure know what you mean about the rain here in sunny Yorkshire (we live in Wakefield so not too far from you). My daughter Ciara is only five but I know when we visited last year she loved the gold coast-lovely beaches and lots of theme parks (she's scooby doo mad!). Suppose she doesn't really understand the ups and downs of emigrating as much as you might but she knows one thing for sure and that is that she wants to spend more time outdoors and lots of time swimming.
I'm sure you'd have no problems making friends like Ali says and hopefully you'll get some more good replys from kids who know.
Good Luck
Ginny
