Younger OnesA forum especially for teenagers and the younger ones making the big move down under. Its here to discuss all things with migrating and living in Australia.
What we did for my daughter is get her a web cam so that she could still see people. She got a book and got people to write down all her contact details. She had a farewell party too (I'm sure you'll talk your mum and dad into that one). From this end, we knew what school she was going to so the principle of the school organised a pen pal for her who she was in contact with before she came, she was given msn addys for other girls in her new class so when she started she felt as if she knew a few people even though they'd never met.
She has found that one or two people haven't made the effort to keep in touch, but without exception all her close friends have, they use msn, bebo, emails etc., send funny cards, postcards etc., despite not seeing each other, I'd say their friendship is still as strong. I wouldn't worry - your real friends will make the effort to stay in touch if you do and you'll always be friends. Although from a mums point of view, it is expensive sending birthday pressies back to England lol
Hi Caitlin
Ali has some great advice, start a scrap book so when you get to Australia you have some memories and some familiar stuff to look back on. It also helps if you can show people where you come from. Take some English sweeties (lollies in Australia) with you, maybe Blackpool rock or something like that so you can hand them out to your new class mates, starts you on a good foot and gives you a few brownie points!!.
I know you may be scared as it is a whole new start in a whole new country but when a new person starts at your school it doesn't take long for them to make friends - the same will happen to you. By the end of the first week you should of made loads of new friends. From the website and all the Brits already over in Oz I bet there will already be English kids in your school who will have been through the 'new girl/boy' feelings not too long ago!!
Hi Tracy,
Thanks for your advice.I will ask my parents about the sweets its a good idea and the scrap book sounds good too I'll get my sister to help me because she likes arts and crafts.
Hi Ali,
Thanks for your advice. We've already got a web cam so I can talk to all of my friends and I've also got loads of note pads for everyone's details. I'm still not sure what school I'm going to but I'll ask my mum.
Once again thanks for your advice,
Hi Caitlin!
I'm sad about leaving my friends too but the way I look at it is that in my school, when new girls/boys start our class everyone want to play with them and they make friends in no time so it will probably be like that in Australia. You will also have two sets of friends. It's not like your not allowed to talk to your old friends anymore, its just that you have to go away on a life long holiday!

P.S
I hope I could help!
