School leaving age in Oz???

I have a 13 year old son who I want to get through all his schooling before the big move.
His B'day is 31st Aug (youngest in the year) so most of his classmates are 14 nearly 15.

Will he have to attend school in Oz when he gets there?
I heard the leaving age was 18

I just want him to get his UK qualifications in case it all goes wrong and we have to come back

Tom

when i left school the minimum age for leaving was 15, although i did not leave that early. i am sure that it is still that now in new south wales... each state controls education within that state. so the minimum age requirements may vary from state to state. you should check out the government websites for the state you are thinking of going to, to find out more info.

Gday Tom, there are plans to raise the leaving age from 16 to 17 in 2009. The main issues are ensuring that most kids finish their year 12, which some do over 2 years instead of one, thus making them 18 when they leave.
One thing you might consider - its much easier to make a network of friends and learn the Oz culture at school than arriving as a new school leaver looking for a job. Might make your son feel more isolated if you wait.
Also not sure how qualifications compare, I seem to remember reading that UK kids need a year to catch up over here, you could check this with the education Dept in the state you plan to settle.
Good luck, and do consider coming earlier. The education standards are at least equal.

My OH would agree with that, he was 4 when he went and nearly 10 when he came home, he was 2 years infront of his peers, the only difference was they knew a little french and he didn't.
regards
Ally

Hi,

My daughter had just started high school year 7 in the UK when we moved here in January. She commenced year 7 here in WA which is the last year of primary School. Year 8 is first year of High School (she's 13 in February). She will start year 12 and turn 17 in the February.

We deliberatly chose to arrive in January so she had a full school year before starting high school in Aus, she hasn't found the curriculum much different except she is learing Japanese (but her high school offers French and she wishes to return to studying that next year). She tells me she's really appreciated having this year to establish herself, make some friends and get to know the system.

My son is just about to turn 15 and has just joined the middle of year 10 here in Queensland. He has been given the option of leaving at the end of this year but in doing that will not have a Year 12 certificate which is really important to get a job. What he is doing is looking for a school based apprenticeship which he will do for 2 years part-time, the rest of the time he will attend school to do his basics Maths, English etc. then at the end of that 2 years he will have a Year 12 Certificate AND will have completed 2 years of an apprenticeship. I think this is a wonderful system for kids who dont want to go to Uni and just want to get into the workplace after school. I think the States do differ but in Queensland you can leave at 15 if you want to but, as the others have said and I would too, its not recommended. Hope this helps you.

It all depends on the state you will be going to. There are moves afoot to increase the school leaving age across the board but there is a degree of resistance from some states so who knows what the situation will be in 5 years time. Scroll down for Australia's leaving ages Raising of school leaving age - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It's a dog's breakfast to be sure!

If your son can get his A levels before he comes here then school will be irrelevant, he will be considered to have completed year 12 and would be eligible for uni with his A level results.
