Question So how'd you choose your area?

As Western Australia is such a HUGE area, I am curious to know how people chose the area that they were gonna start their adventures in....

Then did you move on after you arrived & had a chance to look around, or did you stay in that same area?

Look forward to hearing from you....Thanks

I think it's really hard when you've not lived here previously Kelly or know people who live here. I don't even think a reccie is enough to explore the whole area that WA is. If we had our time over we may have considered regional WA. We didn't even consider it prior to arriving..even though we did lots of research.

We chose northern Perth based on house prices/proximity to coast/city/my work and general appeal. We ended up living closer to the city than I anticipated as the commute was too long for me.

There are so many lovely areas you really are spoiled for choice. Best bet IMO is to get here..rent for a good while (at least 12 months) till you've seen a good amount of areas/suburbs and got a feel for the place.

We've been renting for coming up to 5 months now...still haven't seen half the areas we want to! So much to see.

      Hi

I think it is good to look around and not just settle for the first place you stay in.

When my parents moved they bought a house in the area that they first rented in but soon regretted it as there were so may other lovely suburbs in and around Perth that they found.

      Have a good look round!

No.. theres different areas with different prices - asarulethe closer to the sea you get the more expensive - have a look at reiwa.com.au. Itsmore ofa personalchoice anddepending onwhere you might work.....

      Inland can be cheaper also...

Tara and I have done so much research into this, I have painstakingly gone through crime statistics for every suburb in Perth so we can see what the 'safer' areas are. Then looking at the REIWA website to see what we can get for our money, finally checking out what the local government has to offer. We've gone from 200+ suburbs down to about 5-6, a few NOR and a few SOR.
We have a recce booked in a few weeks time where we are going to check out each area, like doing our food shop in a different suburb every time, talking to people in that area etc etc.
If there is any suburb you want us to visit for you to try and get an impression of what it is like, we'd be happy to have a look for you.

Wow...You really have done your research & then some...Well done guys... Was there any other websites or books that you found useful for research?

I'd really love to know the suburbs that have made your shortlist down from 200!

Thanks for your really kind offer to check out a suburb for me....Very nice of you, but im still at the 200+ stage!!! (well, not quite, but feels like it!)

Hope your recci goes really well for you & I really cant wait to hear all about it...:0)

The main websites we used were WA police statistics, REIWA, Domain suburb profiles and then the local government websites for the areas we chose.
We only looked at areas where we could afford a nice property under $500'000AUD but there are plenty of places $350'000 upwards in these areas, the crime statistics I worked out apply to postcodes not suburbs, these are the ones we chose:-

6025 - Craigie, Hillarys, Kallaroo and Padbury (very low crime rates compared to the Perth average)
6028 - Burns Beach, Currambine, Iluka and Kinross (26% of residents are British, low crime)
6169 - Safety Bay, Shoalwater, Waikiki and Warnbro (Again low crime and close to Rockingham/Mandurah)
6172 - Port Kennedy (Higher Burglary rates but coming from England we should be a little more vigilent anyway!)

The general rule (and it is general) is that the closer to the airport the more crime (not the case in every suburb), Gosnells and Armadale have a lot of crime but then a higher population and the crime level per 1000 people is pretty average.

City of Rockingham government do nice little things like loan pedometers to their residents to encourage walking and healthy living, whereas Port Kennedy seems to have a very close knit family community which would be nice if you wanted to be part of a community spirit.

There is much more but wont bore you with it, here are the website addresses so you can look at your leisure:-

Western Australia Police / Search Crime Statistics
      http://www.domain.com.au/public/apm/....aspx?mode=buy
Real Estate Institute of WA - reiwa.com.au
