Rental shortages

In our paper this morning is an article stating that kiwis are returning to NZ in their droves because of the shortage and expense of rental accomodation in WA. Now the source of the article is an anonymous letter delivered to the Herald Office, and it would have probably been better posted in the letters to the editor section, but I suspect they decided to publish it in response to the number of articles recently about kiwis moving to Oz for better conditions.

The letter states that rental accomodation is expensive and overstretched (with about 30 people trying for the same house) forcing people to return home or move states. It also says there are about two dozen families sleeping in cars at Kwinana beach.

Is there any truth in this? For those living there, did you find it difficult to find rental accomodation that didn't cost a fortune? Was there a lot of competition for the same house?

Not sure on WA but decent rentals here in Adelaide can be hard to find at times.
I think there is a 0.05% vacancy rate.

I'd always take these articles with a little pinch of salt.

Hi

Of course take it with a pinch of salt, but there is some truth in the matter.

We're renting at the moment, paying $320 per week for a 4x2. Finding a decent place was quite competitive - loads of people turned up for every 'open-house', and we were turned down probably because we hadn't got any references. There are cheaper rentals, but generally they're not too nice - what we're paying seems to be the average. To secure a rental we've had to pay 6 months rental upfront because we were new to the country and couldn't get any references from previous landlords etc (the fact that we'd been paying a mortgage for 8 years in the UK meant nothing on our rental applications)

It is true about people living in cars and campsites. It's been headline news and in the local newspapers. The whole situation has been blamed, by some, on the number of immigrants arriving in the area.

Bye for now

Jo

Well I was worrying about the same thing before we came here, but we have been a couple of weeks spent a day looking at rentals and found one no troubel. Maybe we were lucky I don't know but we weren't competing with loads of others. Did buy 3 months upfront as new to the country etc, but have large 3x2 and are buying $330pw. It's a nice house in a great superb and I do think the media love to scare munger!!

Good luck

hi

You guess right:

4x2 means 4 bedroom 2 bathroom
3x2 means 3 bedroom 2 bathroom etc etc etc

Mind if I ask Joksand and the Wottons what part you are renting in. That weekly rental is OK, but we'll be pushing it to pay 3 - 6 months in advance.

I wouldn't have thought living in a campsite was cheaper than that. We've looked at doing this short term in the past.
