north WA - Gascoyne region

Hi all,
I was wondering if anybody has been north of perth - up to Geraldton, Carnarvon etc. Looking at some of the tourist stuff there, it looks like paradise, but unless there is a good job, a decent house and a good school for the kids.... We are still only researching at the moment, and are willing to go to wherever the jobs are, but the area looked so nice. Any info would be appreciated

Emma

Hi

I have just been reading in the West Australian thewest.com.au that Geraldton is to be the next boom town in WA so I guess it would be a good place for work but it is 5 hours drive from the City of Perth & I would suggest that you do some research on weather conditions if you are planning to move so far North it can get really hot.

The region is popular with people who holiday Kalbarri is a lovely place small though & 8 hours drive from Perth but has a good community feel & seems to be booming at the moment.

There are a lot of beautiful places closer to Perth unless you particularly want to live out bush!

Good luck

Thanks for that, I'll look into it. I have to say, it would be hard choosing, if it were just a choice of where to live. We will have to wait for a job offer and where ever that was, would be where we would move to, but WA is certainly ticking all the boxes for me!

Hi Emma,

We are on route to Geraldton (where I got offered work), as small town boy I didn't fancy a city life. Having looked into the place, although it is a little remote..it seems to have the majority of things and a 4 hour drive to Perth occasionally doesn't seem to be too big a price to pay. We also have a 5 year old and there are things to occupy her there...just different things to what she does now!!

Good luck,
Mac.

hi , can I be cheeky and ask what line of work are you in and how you got a job offer? Did you need the job in order to get a visa? Good luck with the move - how is it all going so far?

Hi Emma,

Not being cheeky at all....I am a mechanic. I got the job offer when I met the company at the London "Australia Needs Skills Expo" and they do everything for the visa..I just supply the details, they hire an agent and that is all done...just putting all the paperwork together ready to (hopefully) send tomorrow.

It was a pure luck meeting someone who wanted my trade, saying that....mechanics are really sought after...I take a wage cut compared to UK, but I should be able to see my daughter grow up...over here I am missing a lot of that..family life is the main reason we are going.

We did a lot of soul searching before committing to what a few people on here describe as "going into the bush", but to be honest a small place like this, working for a family owned company is more us than city life (we find Swindon big). The other reason is I am a bit long in the tooth (44) so I wanted to get out there sooner rather than later and some folks have been getting 457's pretty quick. Also we are not going there with a suitcase full of cash like some on here so moving directly into employment is also attractive to us.

Enjoy,
Mac

sounds like you have it all sorted! I wish we were where you are now!! My OH will not decide if he wants to go or not until he has been out there. Only 32 weeks till we go and visit his brother in Syd!! (I'm not counting!) OH works in as a supp & dist. manager, but for a small firm, so our only option will be a job offer for the 457. In laws have just come back and were well impressed with Syd, but as we come from a fairly small town, I don't think city life would be our thing. We also prefer somewhere more community minded, where kids can be kids and there is plenty of space. That's why I like the look of WA. Best of luck in the move, and maybe we'll see you out there one day!

Emma
