I love to sail, and having done some research have realised that there are a crazy number of sailing clubs in Perth. Great! However, it seems that my choice is too great so I'm looking for some help...
I'm looking for a Sailing Club that is more of a sailor's club (i.e. not into cruising on a motor launch - wind only!), but is also accepting of all forms of sailing. I'm happy on a kiteboard or windsurfer, spent many years racing Lasers and Hobiecats and like crewing on yachts. I like to race, but don't take it too seriously.
From past experience anything with 'Royal' in the title is usually a little too stuffy and serious for me as I prefer a more laid back atmosphere. It seems Nedlands focusses a lot on Hobiecats and Maylands is very much dinghies only. At the moment, it would seem that either Hillary's or East Freemantle is my best bet. If you can shed any light on either these two or others, it would be very useful as this decision will influence where I choose to live!

I've never spent long enough in Perth/Fremantle to have time to investigate the smaller - dinghy & dayboat - types of clubs.
We went to the Royal Perth - which was OK. My sister then said that Fremantle Sailing Club is much less formal and so forth. Jim & walked there from the Harbour, arriving at about 5pm on a Saturday.
As we trotted into the foyer I caught sight of people in the bar! Flag Officers dressed in whites with gold epaulettes and the ladies got up to the nines! I gasped, "Jim! This place is grander than the Royal Yacht Squadron! They won't let a pair of scruffs like us in here!"
"Of course they will and I want a beer! We're boat owners and we're welcome," said Jim.
"What shall I put in the visitors book?"
"Put Royal Southern Yacht Club." Of which Jim was not a member, having told them that he would pay for his drinks in their bar but would not pay to be allowed into their bar!
Needless to say a real RSrn member (I assume) had signed the book four signatures up from mine the same day.
I hissed, "Jim! There's a real RSrn member here today!!!"
"Oh? Who? Anyone we know?"
"Jim! Be serious! What are we supposed to call these people? Sir?"
"Call them Claude. All yotties answer to Claude," said Jim firmly.
Actually despite the grandeur they were incredibly nice, very welcoming and disappointed that we had reached Perth by air! We also found the dinghy section of the club out by the barbie once we got past the grandees in the Palm Court or whatever the posh bit is called.
It is as good a place as any other when you first arrive - it is not at all stuffy, despite first impressions. The Commodore didn't flinch when Jim called him Claude!
Dont know anything about sailing ,But the western australian sailing club is situated on the front at the corner of riverside drive and barrack street perth
not much help i know but all i can give

Thanks to those of you who have replied. Is there really no one who has recently moved to Perth and checked out the sailing scene? I suppose the weather in UK is too miserable most of the time for a lot of people to get interested in it! Maybe life in Oz will change all that - you can't beat the wind and the waves (and a few beers after!) for a great day out.
