Advice.....

Hello Everyone,

My husband and I have two children, one is 5 years old and one is 8 months and we really want to move to oz in a couple of years, we were thinking Perth and are planning to come out for three weeks at Christmas. We will hopefully have about £100k to bring with us when we do move. My partner is an Electrician. We want to come out to give our kids a better outdoor life with more prospects then the Uk. We would like to be nearish to the sea, not to rural.

Do you think we have enough money to get started?
Will my husband find work quite easily?
Where do you think the best place to live is that best suits our needs?
What do you miss most about the UK?

I better shut up now, I can tell I'm boring you!!!
Thank you for your time and advice.

Hi.
My brother is an electrician and he emigrated with his wife, 2 children and bump one year ago. He got through the visa process no probs as he had all the necessary documents, eg. apprenticeship, qualification certificates, references, etc.
They moved to the Gold Coast after taking a trip to both Perth and Melbourne, deciding there was more for their young family (ages 6, 2 and 0) to do there. (So as not to offend anyone, this suited their needs as a family, but I am sure that others have all they need in Perth and Melbourne.)
Since arriving and taking all the necessary tests to trade as an electrician my brother has work coming out of his ears and this looks set to be the case for the next few years at least. He's about to start a course to become self employed.
They live in Robina, 10 minutes to the beach but just out of the way of the busy tourist thing. Very highly sought after suburb I think. Has good schools, shops, etc.
Erm.....would you like to know anything else?!!!!!

Ah, I have more answers. I think in all they had just over £100k. Quite a lot got eaten up with the move, buying cars, etc when they first arrived, but as my brother started work after about a month they manage just fine now. They have said that it's not as cheap as they were expecting as everything is all relative, eg. wages are less so house prices and food, etc equals life in the UK really. Their house is lovely though and the biggest they've ever had.
They miss family and a good indian take away. But that really is it. They love their new life and the kids are really happy.

Hi again.
I have no idea if there's a fly problem in Perth! I did ask my brother about 'flying beasts' (as I do have a large problem with wasps, bees, hornets, etc) in the Gold Coast and he said that it is something he hasn't even thought about. So that indicates to me that it can't be any different to here otherwise he probably would have noticed. And after a year they have had only one enormous spider in the house.
My family and I are hoping to emigrate too. We plan of course to go to the Gold Coast to be with my brother but I am not expecting it to be perfect. It may not be for us but I'd like to say we tried. At the moment I hear nothing but bad news from friends and family and the country generally and I just don't want to be full of regret.
My hubby is a dryliner and with no qualifications it isn't going to be easy for us to get a visa but we'll do our best I am sure! If it's meant to be... and all that!

Another thing my brother said is that, although at the end of each month they probably don't have as much spare cash to play with, there are so many more things that they can do now that doesn't cost anything, that they consider themselves to be better off. In the last year they think they've spent more time as a family than in the first four years of their daughters life here in England.

I miss them all like mad. And there isn't anything quite like a hug, but we speak to them every weekend via the webcam so I get to see everyone and I've seen my new neice too.

..Hi Sarah..Perth has so many different suburbs around the city it's hard to say where is best to live..some say North of the river and others South..it's personal preference, and you will get more of an idea when you visit as to areas and what you can afford..i love Sorrento and surrounding areas, but out of our league financially..my brothers live in Canning Vale and Kensington, which are lovely areas also..i was brought up in Perth and have spent many years with my own family there..we have had to come back to the UK for a while, but are heading back to Perth in September..downside to Perth?..i've heard people say it is isolated and boring..for me personally i find it hard to say what the downsides are..it suits our family..as i've said it's a beautiful & clean city and there is plenty for us to do..we love the beaches and there are plenty of places to eat out..we particularly like Freo (Fremantle), Kings Park and Hillary's, and then you can travel to beautiful places along the North and South of W.A. - Ali and Janette (Mrs Braveheart) are living in Perth and it's worth reading a few of their posts as they will have some good info for you..hope this helps..
Tess

Hi Sarah,

My brother lives in Brisbane and My first visit to Aus was in 2005 to visit him, we also took the opportunity to visit Sydney and Cairnes. I thought the east coast was beautiful, but not for us, a memember recently said it was fun, fun, fun, but for me it was busy, busy busy. There are lots of theme parks which my 2 would love - but in reality how often would we go - not very. They've looking forward to it as a holiday destination and to see their cousins though. As Tess has said, Perth gets called Isolated and Boring - the fact that it isn't overpopulated was a big plus for me and instead of boring I find it really relaxing (I have never been so relaxed in my entire life). We're close to Asia and my hope is to re-do our honeymoon of Hong Kong and Thailand at some point. I live South of River in Leeming which only 10 mins away from the city and 20 mins from Freo (my favourite place) is wonderful ... also not far from Canning Vale Tess. The city is clean, my inlaws loved Mandura. We have theatres, a major entertainment complex and casino, there's heaps of sports etc., for the kids, theirs sports to watch, cricket, AFL, Soccer, basketball, rugby,

I accept though that it won't be for everyone ..... just as the east coast wasn't for us - even with my brother living there.

Ali
