cost of setting up again!

THANK YOU to all the great info posted in my last question. SOrry I just seem to have so many questions.

If I arrive in Perth with no furniture etc what am I looking at to kit out a 2 bed appartment with the bare necesities of beds fridge couch etc - is second hand worth it and available or is new better?. How much money will a cheap 2nd hand car cost? How much will i need to live before i get my first salary cheque - which would be 6 weeks time?

Thanks guys!

Simone

If you don`t mind second hand just to get you started - then the local ads paper (the Quokka Classifieds by Quokka Online is your friend - that and the local paper telling you when the garage sales are (we picked up some oil heaters for a bargain price- useful in Winter). Alternatively and depending on when you arrive we found the end of financial year sales in June really good for getting bargains on furniture - plus in many places you can bargain with them & play them against each other to get lower prices. You also have the new Ikea which is pretty handy and it does delivery I believe. Big W, Target and K mart are pretty handy for bedding & stuff (plus they do tvs, microwaves etc), electrical wise you have Good Guys and Retravision.
As for how much money you`d need to last til pay day then it all depends on what you do - do you like to eat out a lot etc, I would say just try and save up as much as you can, you`ll need money for deposits on rentals too don`t forget.Sit down, write a list of everything you`ll need in those first few weeks(plates, cutlery, iron etc), then write another list of what you`d like longer term but could without straight away.

Hi Simone

I agree with the previous poster you can get some good bargains in the Quokka which you can purchase from local newsagencies on a Thursday.

www.quokka.com.au

People here often hold garage sales at the weekends too, they put the goods they want to sell in their garage & open up on a Saturday & Sunday.. these sales are often advertised in the local free papers which are delivered once a week to homes in their distribution area. Or again you can purchase the papers at the newsagents.

Here are some sites of local stores you may be able to research the cost of items that way

www.kmart.com
Welcome to Target
Welcome to BIG W
www.goodguys.com
www.rickhart.com.au

Second hand cars are advertised in the Quokka, The West Australian (big supplement in Wednesday & Saturday) & in the Sunday Times. You will find it hard to find a good cheap second hand car as easily as you would in the UK.. Cars here tend to keep their value because there is no MOT so people dont have to maintain their vehicles if they dont want to. This results in people hanging on to older vehicles & asking a lot of money (by comparison to UK) for something older. It is likely that you wouldnt find much under $2000 & to get a reasonable second hand vehicle would be nearer $5000- but you might be lucky & find a good one just look at as many as you can.

It would probably be a good idea to have an independant assesment of second hand vehicle by a local workshop or the RACEve

Log yourself on to the local Freecycle group via Yahoo and keep an eye on the sort of things that are being offered there - for the short term you may pick up something for nothing (but will need transport obviously to collect it) and then if/when you move into something more permanent you can recycle it on freecycle and buy up stuff that you want to live with for the longer term. The rate of exchange on freecycle can be very rapid.

Failing that - Fantastic Furniture do package deals for very economical rates which will give you matching furniture for main rooms of a small house. It's not top top quality but it is perfectly liveable with.

Did you work out that you will be in Perth after all? That gives you much more scope about what will be available.

Second hand car prices are more expensive here - you could get a general reliable runabout for about 2-3000 AUD.

KMART - Cheap but terrible quaity. Second hand furniture generally cheap here in Perth.

We have a great Ikea here in WA, Rick Hart has a seconds shop in canning vale - we got a fridge freezer from there for our garage for about £360 - it had been an ex display model - no dints or dinges in it and it's been Brilliant.

Furniture Bazarre is pretty good too. Gone Bazarre - also in Canning Vale is good for crockery/glasswear. Kmart and Target always have some sort of sale on too.

Thanks everyone and Quoll - you are a resident genius!
Where I am at is that I have applied as they are recruiting now for probation officers and if I get the post I get about 50 000. My husband will not be in a position to get a job immediately and then it will be unskilled wage. My salary changes after a year.............just dont know if thats enough to survive for a year!
And yes - decided it is Perth or no where - Dont want to live to remotely for my first year there!

Thanks
