hi we can't choose where to settle, Perth or Brisbane. we have 2 boys 16 and 12 years old eldest is a skateboarder and into bmx'n younger is footie mad as for us well i have uncle in perth which is probably one of the reasons i'm drawn to there, oh and the beaches and dolphins, turtles, whales and from what i can make out kinda laid back for a city. Brisbane i am drawn to because of being nearer to daytrippin' places, gold coast-themeparks, rainforests, interesting city?
OH is into photography(scenery, wildlife) and i on the other hand like to shop(mostly window) clothes, one-off shops, junk shops, both like going out socially(together)
please help with our dilema. BTW we have never been to either and will have to get fairly modest housing(3/4 beds)

Hi Jane ,
We were like yourselves looking at both the above ,it's a hard decision to make !!!!. We were drawn to Brisbane but like you we haven't had the opportunity to visit either. We have 3 children , 2 girl's (18 & 11) and boy of 16 . At the end of the day only you and O/H can make that decision but what ever one you make, i'm sure it will be the right one for you and your family .
Sorry - I can't help with your choice - I have the same dilemma. At the moment I''m leaning strongly towards Perth, but I'm a bit put off by the distance from the rest of Australia. Perth to Sydney is as long a flight as the UK to the Canary Islands.
I don't think anyone can make the decision for you. Yes it takes a few hours to fly to Sydney/Brissy etc., but you're near to wonderful places like Singapore, Bali and the far east. WA has a more laid back life style than QLD which will appeal to some and not to others. House prices in QLD are probably cheaper - but rising whereas Perth prices are slowing down. There are pro's and cons for all the states really and only you can decide which one will meet your needs. We visited Brisbane, Sydney and Cairns and settled in Perth without having been here - we don't regret our decision as it suits the lifestyle we were looking for.

thanks for the replies,
Perth seems to be where we have our hearts set, its just heads saying brisbane for prices and possibly cheaper school fees?(457 visa) i think we will try our best for perth, has anyone seen the lonely planet videos on net, omg perth looks fantastic we feel we already know it and have done so much research we just need to get it right, it will be a big enough upheaval for the kids as it is. got uncle in perth too so someone from home(even though he has been there nearly 40 years)
Probably biased as from Perth but it does have a lot to offer and you really shouldn't be put off by the fact that it is seen as being "isolated". It is has many fantastic towns and places of natural beauty to visit and holiday in without the need to venture interstate or overseas - surely wherever people settle they should spend time getting to know that state and not worry about how far it is to somewhere else. Be it Brisbane, Perth or even another state that you eventually settle in, enjoy and make the most of it. Good luck x

we are choosing perth, as my sister lives there. even though i have been to the east coast and loved it. i know its more isolated, i was thinking the same. But to be honest i have lived in bournemouth my whole life and have never really travelled round uk, and will prob be the same with perth. Once I find a nice beach and some good shops thats it for me! lol
@ Janie - thanks for mentioning the lonely planet videos on perth. We checked them out and they're amazing - it looks like Perth is definitely going to be the place we're going.
Plus, I like the fact that Perth is a shorter flight from the UK. Better for persuading those relatives who don't really like long flights to come out and visit.
Hi Jane
Cant’t help you choose but with regard to jobs and housing WA is said to have the strongest economy which must obviously be good for jobs, it’s led to a big increase in house prices over recent years and made Perth the second most expensive city to buy a house after Sydney although prices seemed to have slowed down recently. There are enourmous variations between different suburbs as you can imagine but the ‘average’ Perth house according to the Australian press in January was £215k compared to £180k in Brisbane (£150 Adelaide).
Good Luck
