Just Landed in Perth/Advice Needed Please re Work for Carpet Fitters and Rentals
Hi there,
Myself, my husband and one year old son have just arrived in Perth on a skilled visa. We adore Perth but so far are having a lot of difficulties with:
1) Finding a rental property
2) Finding work as a Carpet Fitter/Floor Finisher
Before we came out here we were told by loads of people that carpet fitters were pretty well paid and there was loads of work due to the employment boom. However, my husband has made enquiries at a couple of carpet shops since we arrived a few days ago and have been told that basically there is no work around for at least a month and that there are people here already on a waiting list to work for them. We are currently staying in the Quinns Rock area, does anyone know of any carpet fitting work available in this or any other area of Perth? My husband has years of experience and is a skilled tradesman and very hardworking.
Also, although we thought we had done our research, the rental situation has shocked us. We went to another viewing today and at least 20 people showed up and there is another viewing for the same property in a couple of days. Does anyone know of anyone renting privately in this or a nearby area? We are looking for at least 2 beds? Thank you everyone in anticipation of your help. We have come this far and would be so upset to fail and have to go back to the UK.
Hi Sarah, cant help with the job problem, but I would suggest contacting some work agencies, we did this when we first arrived and it did help until the job became available that my oh wanted.
Rentals, I was given some advice when I was in your situation, if you find a rental that you like / want, on the rental application offer to pay a few months rent in advance along with the bond, doing this may give you the better chance of being successful compared to the othere applicants.
Good Luck,

I will suggest that to my husband. He is very disappointed on the work front and also the cost of living here in Perth has shocked us. As I said, we thought we had done our research but I guess some things you don't find out until you actually land here.
We will give your suggestion a try about offering some rent in advance, fingers crossed it might give us an edge on the other applications.

Hi, you are right, we are only a few days in and its best not to be put off too soon. For myself I love Oz so much I am not too deflated - yet!! This is my hubby's first time in Oz and the disappointment of the past few days has given him doubts and a bit of a bad first impression of Oz, which I guess is only natural. Hopefully if we can at least secure a rental things will look up. Thanks for your message. Will keep you posted if we have any luck.
Im sorry to hear of your initial disappointments and hope things can get better. My husband is a carpet fitter and we are thinking of moving out to oz (maybe perth). Would be grateful if you could let us know how u get on. Many thanks. Heather.
Hi there, I will definitely let you know how we get on. We have been told that we have come at the worst time of year, so perhaps if you aim to come over in the Australian winter, you might get off to a better start than us with at least accommodation and possibly work. Will keep you posted.
Be aware, The cost of living in Perth Metro is still shooting up.... the news today states rental properties median price pushing the $400 per week barrier.Me thinks you need to be earning $85k gross or $60k net to break even and live here! Thats no luxuries mind. Sorry cant help with the carpet fitting, but in a couple of years when we can afford it, ours need replacing!
