hi all im sooo depressed having read thats there no building boom in perth. We have applied for a skilled migrateion visa as my husband is a builder with his own company. dont know what to do. i know its best to find out now but i just dont understand why everywhere says they are crying out for builders. is there anywhere in oz builders are needed or has our dream come to an end.
Hi sarah
We feel the same as you - on one had we hear that these skills are in short supply, then its all doom+gloom. i understand that the interest rate hike must be having an effect on things but hopefully there is still going to work for the likes of you and us out there somewhere. Plumber friend of ours just left this week for Perth, so I will be CONSTANTLY quizzing them about the job situation over there over the next few months. im just hoping by the end of the year, when we are hoping to go over, that things are again picking up. Fingers crossed eh??

Building construction invariably suffer when interest rates head for the roof. I think the rate was 8.75% in WA a few days ago.
Domestic buyers stop shopping - as in the UK. Commerial investors do carry on but they become bearish as well, usually.
Also, it depends on where one wants to work. There are some quite new mines in WA which means infrastructure for them is required. They can't possibly build all of that out of scaffolding poles etc, I wouldn't think.
Apparently also there is a place called Echo Bay somewhere in WA (that is what it sounded like on the telly.) The plan seems to be salt pans because salt is essential to making anything out of plastic according to the Tropic of Capricorn documentary recently. This project is pretty new so if it has gone/is going ahead, it may spawn a new township nearby or at any rate make an existing one bigger.
Yep - the place is out in the sticks somewhere. However that is the way things can be with Australia.
Apparently, though, these new mines etc pay top dollar because they cannot attract the workers unless they pay big bucks.
gill was that the place with them big dumper trucks, my hubby said hed be happy to drive one of them around, (he`s a brickie) apparently you dont even need a special licence to drive them as they are off road.
sarah reading on forums apparently most of the brickies seem to be heading out to queensland now, seems the boom is there now, but aldo may be able to tell you different.

Hi Donna
No, that was the iron ore mine.
Echo Bay or whatever it is called is where humpback whales rest with their young in order to gain an extra half-ton of fat before heading for their Antarctic geeding grounds. My guess is that Echo Bay (if I heard the telly correctly) is near Ningaloo Reef because that is the WA area for whale-watching.
The program is on BBC iPlayer for another 24 hours or so, therefore if both of you are quick you may be in time to see the relevant portions again.
Thanks for that. I told my hubby and he isnt having a panic like i am. we are still going and he believes the work is out there. if not he said he would try something else.
Perth is for us so no looking back.
I think wages are lower generally than UK, but the best thing to do is not to convert £ to $ and visa versa and just live within your means. Hubby and I are on less money than uk, but we're living pretty comfortably, have been able to start the home improvements we want to do (although it's getting bigger than Ben Hur!), put a bit of money in the savings and pay off a bit extra on the mortgage ... so we're not doing too bad on less money
Billy Braveheart is a brickie and a lovely man and will be happy to offer any advise I'm sure, also from a non brickie person - I see loads of houses being built - so there must still be a demand. The trouble with working on/in the mines is that it's generally fly in, fly out work, hubby considered this but we came to spend more time as a family and not less, my friends hubby (kiwi), came over for a few months before the rest of his family and worked the mines, as soon as the family arrived he didn't want to spend that much time away from them. Good money I believe though.

There may be loads of houses being built but there are a zillion out of work bricklayers!
