Spiders and snakes - Do you need to check everything?

Hiya

We are wanting to move to Perth. I am so excited, but have a fear of the 8 legged species.

I have heard about this spray people use around doors and windows. Does this actually work?

Also do you need to turn your socks out to check them everytime you put them on?

Check all shoes before putting them on?

Checking toilet seats etc???

Or it is the typical poms hyping things up, because we simnply do not know or understand Australia? Make out its more dangerous than what it is? I gathered the Funnel Web is mainly in Sydney areas. I might get away with that.

Snakes I am not too concerned about. You can easily see them. At least I think you could. Unless my dog decides to bring one in.

How do you live with the spiders and snakes. How do you tackle it. Considering our spiders are pretty small and non venomous likes thiers.

xx

Nope, you're hyping it up!

Red backs are more likely out in the wood pile and I have never seen one inside (other than the ones DH has brought in!) Nor are they aggressive (you wont be getting Sydney funnel webs out there!) and a judicious stomp or whack with a paper can work wonders.

The toilet seat myth is based on the outside dunnies when redbacks did sit under the seat but an inside loo - no worries. If you leave your shoes outside over night you might want to check them but otherwise it's all a big beat up!

I thought it was. People were saying that they thought you had to do this, because they read it on the net. It goes to show. I didnt want to argue saying no thats not true, when I really didnt know.

I am so excited to move. 2 years. Please hurry.

Hi Angel - I was exactly the same as u when it came to spiders and snakes. But i also read that no one has died from a redback bite since the 1950's when the anti venom stuff was invented (pretty goods stats) So anyway thats good enough for me cos it always worried me (im soooo scared off wasps and spiders here never mind there) Was thinking that i might need to give paul mckenna a call haha!

Ah now, the killer wasps!

Around here they are convinced that the European wasp can kill you stone dead with a glare at 10 paces! No, all joking aside, because it is a nasty new immigrant, we legally have to report any European wasps nests and I have seen adults get into a real paddy if there is one flying around. Whilst of course none of us like them I am sure they dont get the same hysterical reaction in UK. Sort of puts things like redbacks into perspective I feel.

When i asked my wee gran if she wanted to move to oz with us her reply was 'aye that'll be right the wasps carry b****y handbags over ere' Erm take it thats a no then lol. Hi,

We've been on the Gold Coast for 7 weeks now, probably about week 3 we were in a DIY store and saw some of the spray that you spray around the outside of your house, so bought some and thought we'd give it a go - we hadn't seen any spiders at this point, the next morning there was a dead red back spider on the patio, the neighbour has also seen several red backs recently and said they are about this season - can't say about Perth though. We've also had another couple of spiders that were'nt red backs but were fairly big - both of these appeared at night. Its a bit scary because we have two young children at home so have to be on guard, but if you use the spray regularly they shouldn't be able to get in the house. We were told the red back like to live under brickwork ledges and the houses on our estate all have these ledges about 2 foot up!!

Don't want to scare anyone, its something that people here have always lived with, its just knowing what to do!

Liz

Hi

In Perth my garage which is attached to the house is full of redbacks & even had one in the kitchen last week. Most of it is a hype but yes I do bang my shoes before they go on as our friends did have a spider run out of them. Haven't seen any snakes altho the neighbour had one in his front garden. Its just a case of being wary.

we've been in South West WA for 4 months and we've had red backs in our garden shed but none in the house. You just get used to it and no you don't have to check toilet seats in the house but we do shake our shoes just incase one has decided to crawl inside. You'll find most of the time you'll be either in bare feet or thongs so you'll be fine. Rain brings the spiders in apparently but we've only had one nasty spider in the house which was a white tail (they make you very sick but there is an anti venom) but he was more scared of us than we were of him. You just get used to it honest - I now own a long handled dust pan and brush and sweep them up and plonk them outside as I treat everything as if its poisonous and then you can't go wrong. To be honest I reckon we've had about 3 spiders in the house and each one has been removed and hasn't come back, also had two cockroaches but hey its hot here and my cooking is rather good so they thought they'd pop in for tea. You can buy spray at Bunnings for your window cills and its not very expensive and worth it if you are nervous. My OH thought I'd be a nightmare about having spiders in the house but I'm pretty cool about it and I've learnt to sweep the alfresco and remove all spider webs with the brush before we sit down but if you use it everyday they won't bother you. You just have to be aware of them but you soon do it all instinctively and without freaking out at the thought of a spider.
