We arrived in Perth on the 3rd of Jan, and after a bit of travelling around we've settled for Port Kennedy. For the moment we're renting on Grand Ocean Boulevard - in the middle, close to Chelmsford - we've been here about 3 weeks now.
We've got two young boys - the eldest has just started Year 1 at Port Kennedy Primary and the youngest (age almost 3) is really missing him. Can anyone could recommend any playgroups in the area?
I've looked at the Playgroups WA website and we went to a group on Friday in Discovery Cres, but it's a bit of a long way to walk in the heat (I drive, but my husband needs the car at the moment), so I just wondered whether anyone knows of any closer to Chelmsford ave, PK Primary etc.
Also, as I said, we're renting at the moment. We don't think we'll be able to afford the place we're renting or any on Grand Ocean Blvd, so I'd be interested to hear any comments and opinions of the areas around here. We'd like to stay within walking/cycling distance of PK Primary (as long as James settles and is happy there - so far so good!) We looked at a place on St Michel Est today - seems really nice and reasonably priced.
Any comments on the area, the best places to play, advice on activities for the kids, your favourite stretch of beach etc etc, will be much appreciated. I've not been 'out there' much to meet people yet, things still don't feel very normal, but I'm sure once my husbands found the right job and we settle into the school year things will calm down a bit! Tell me your settling in stories!
Many thanks
Jo

Welcome.
You can't beat Warnbro Beach in the morning for a walk or a swim before the afternoon sea breeze kicks in. Usually quiet if you go to the Cote D'Azur Gardens car park and walk to the right a little along the beach. Also Shoalwater Beach is very nice with the islands off shore, although not as child friendly due to a steeper drop off in the water.
Regards to finding somewhere to live have you looked in old Warnbro, beach side of Currie St?
Some good buys in there close to the beach if you don't mind an older style brick and tile house.
Good luck

Thanks for your advice. The beach we've been going to mostly is the one at the end of Bayeux Ave - is that Shoalwater? (not the nude beach bit!), but perhaps we'll try a bit further up now too. It does seem really nice - the boys love it, but it's a shame that not all the dog walkers pick up after their four-legged friends. I love to see dogs running on the beach, but don't particularly enjoy having to look out for their mess!
Old Warnbro looks like a good option - we'll have to keep our eyes on the real estate pages.
Thanks again
Jo

Hi we are hoping to be moving to Perth in the next 4-5 weeks,we are interested in Port Kennedy and have 3 boys so will also be looking for good schools and playgroups. How big is the school ? (how many pupils) ,our school at the moment only has 80 and we do worry slightly about the bigger schools because our children wont be used to them.Is there any local football teams for children?
There are a few Primary Schools in the PK area including a Catholic one -
You have Endeavour Primary, Rockingham Lakes, POrt Kennedy Primary,St Bernadettes Primary (you don`t necessarily have to be Catholic for your child to attend). It would all be dependent upon where in PK you live (unless you go private).
Just an update, for anyone who's interested, on playgroups around Port Kennedy. We've now found two lovely ones;
Tuesday 930-11am - 'Toddler Jam' at Warnbro Community Church on Warnbro Sound Ave next to the Aqua Jetty. $5 for lots of singing and dancing, dress ups, bubbles and playtime, plus 'morning tea' included (lovely cakes!!) Really friendly, welcoming group.
Tuesday or Friday 1030am Warnbro Community Library. Storytime with rhymes and songs then craft-time afterwards. Really friendly and FREE!
So, that's what we've settled for at the moment. We're spending quite a bit of time at the Aqua jetty too and hope to try out the creche soon.
Thanks everyone for your previous advice - things seem to be coming together a little bit more for us now and we're starting to feel a bit more settled.
Ermintrudemcmoo - is it you who lives in Toulon Gardens?? We had a look at that house for sale - mmmm mustard and a beautiful view of the 'Golden Arches'! (sorry if I've got the wrong person - just ignore me!!!)
Hope this post can help any other newcomers to the area.
Bye for now
Jo

Yep - we live over the road from that house - I did laugh at the wall colour on Realestate - but it`s only paint. I have to say the only thing I don`t like about my house is when I come out my front and can just see the top of the arches over the house roofs
