Hi , we have had our hearts set on moving to perth, but just recently we have been hearing how expensive it is to live there now.
can anyone give us some information on this , such as
food shopping
house rents
petrol
public transport
utility bills.
people keep saying its expensive,so need to now if it more expensive then the uk,
if any one can help that would be great thanks
I dont think its more expensive than the UK - cheaper in many ways - houses in particular despite the recent rises. I'm looking at earning about 1/2 as much in Oz compared to my UK salary - when I get there later this year, but being a little better off on average. Cars seem to be relatively expensive though compared to $$ salaries.

Hi Lisa..i was chatting to my little brother (well not so little at nearly 40!)..where we haven't been in Perth for a few years we were comparing living standards and if anything i would think it was a little cheaper..i know house prices have gone through the roof, but i really think it's swings and roundabouts..a couple of things you don't have to pay are council tax and tv. license and compared to here rentals are very good..my brother said in Canningvale the rentals are between $300 - $400 a week now, which is £135 - £175, and there is no way you'd get a 5 bed, 2 en-suites open plan house like my brother's over here for that price!..so i don't think you have to worry too much..i can't comment on jobs..all the best.. Pingpongor Tess!

hi well i hope your 60 days come quikly for you, well thats very comforting to now its not as expensive as i have heard, do you now any nice places for us to start we have 2 boys 4 and 8 , we are looking at leeming , fremantle but again heard that expensive,

Freo will be more expensive to rent in, and also popular areas such as in the Rossmoyne catchement area. Like anywhere the closer you are to the beach the more expensive it is to rent or buy.
Petrol is going up (live everywhere else in the world), the highest I've seen it is $1.46 - the cheapest I've paid is $1.19 - we do have a man at work who checks the petrol prices on line everyday to find the cheapest garage.
realestate.com will give you an idea of what's available for rent and how much it costs. Try not to compare £ for $ - we've found we've been able to manage comfortably on the salaries we get here. Food is more seasonal. I think Fish is expensive (which surprised me) but meat is cheap and good quality.
I've only caught the train once (on saturday) $8.10 for a family ticket into the city - once in the city they have free buses that will take you around the city centre, to kings park etc., down to the esplanade etc.

..i think Ali is right..comparing £ for $ is not always a good thing..when we first went to Aus we use to do that all the time, especially in the supermarkets and it can drive you a bit crazy!..you'll probably do the same for a while, but you do eventually forget.. Pingpongor Tess
Hi
was really pleased to read your email!!!You wont know how much better that made me feel!!
Am part way to moving to Perth, very excited, but with 2 young children and a good life here I cannot stop worrying about the lower salary, about half,my husband has accepted for a job in Perth.
We are not looking to get rich, enjoy a modest lifestyle, just want to enjoy one there without being broke!!Please let me know how you get on.
Regards pottsy
just to add that I had similar concerns, hubby and I were on good wages and we had a very comfortable life - I have to say that it isn't any different here. We still both work full time, but both of us feel more relaxed about work and life in general. It's quite a slow pace here in WA - my hubby says he even walks more slowly than he used to!!
Your goals of having a comfortable life style and not being broke are (I think) certainly within your reach, ours were exactly the same and we've achieved it.
