Why do so many Brits choose Perth?

Why is it everytime I meet someone here in England who is going to or planning ongoing to Oz they are always off to Perth. It should be called Pomsville there's that many of us there now!!!

Don't get me wrong I'm not having a pop at Perth - is a safety in numbers thing on their part or just lack of imagination?

Hi Tom

Could be a safety in numbers thing, but for us well, we are not sure yet, we were settled on going to Cairns at least thats what my heart says, but my head says we need to go somewhere that has good employment opportunities for hubby and as a pipe fitter/welder with some great contacts for work in Perth hubby says we need to think realistically.

I have not given up on Cairns yet but workwise OH wants to get more contacts and an aussie cv started and then look at moving on, wotk for industrial pipe fitters seems few and far between in Cairns and we are struggling to make a break through in that area.

As I say we are still not 100% though and are still working on it.

Another reason, Cairns has not one single snooker club and by god I have spoke to everyone there even the guy from 8 ball and he says there is no development for kids in pool or snooker...... nothing, my 12 year old would be gutted if he could not pursue his new found love which he has dedicated himself to being coached in I know it may not seem much to others, but to him its an important part of his life. Cant see the attraction myself

This move has to work for everybody and the difficult thing is finding a place that does. Perth seems to so far. Its all so confusing

Andy & Rach will become famous soon enough
lack of imagination?

that's a bit harsh!

I for one along with my partner am aiming for Perth for the main reason that my parents emigrated-and are extremely happy-there.

Other reasons that attract me and attracted my parents there in the first place:

-The weather. Perth /WA arguably has the best weather of any of the major Oz cities. More hours of sunshine, warmer winters etc

-The laid-back lifestyle: Perth apparently has a reputation for being 'a bit backward' and behind the times - which suits me down to the ground as I like the pace of my life to be relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxed!

-Also, smaller city than the other 'obvious' choices eg, Sydney, Melbourne- so I'm hoping maybe a bit more personal?

To be fair, I would be happy anywhere in Australia and everyone chooses their destination for a reason........personally can't wait to get there and away from the 'rat-race' to a country that is something like 20 times the size of the UK with the total population for Oz equivalent to the population of London!!!

Yippee lucky me!! (well, fingers crossed anyway!!)

Hope this answers your questions

There are more english, irish, scots over here in Perth than in the UK it seems. Some suburbs are called Little Britain, infact most suburbs are. You will never loose your accent whatever it is over here because Brits seems to be the majority you are hard pushed to find an Ozzy over here. Western Australia (W.A) stands for "wait awhile" they are sure laid back over here, takes a wee while to get into that mode but when you do ....................ah bliss....................drive slower, don't get stressed out that next week could mean next month ....who cares........it will happen eventually...........

Plenty of Aussies where we are, we moved here because we have relatives in the Perth Hills, plus hubby had a job offer.

For us it was most of the reasons that Andy & Rach gave (except having rellys in Perth). But recenlty alot have been put off by the house prices and are heading to QLD

Don't you mean it's the most isolated city in the country?

I'm not saying it's not a spectacular place to live - there's plenty of them in Oz

Perth is just becoming so 'British' - I've spoke at length to poms living in Perth and they have started to say that there are certain British traits that are starting to show like lack of respect and all the drug/drink related violence. I'm not talking about Aussies here either!!!
