What about rural?

It seems as if all the attention is on the major cities. What about living rural in Western Australia? Can anybody tell me what to expect if I decide to move rural (2-3 hours from town). Are there plenty of houses to choose from or is self-build the way to go? Here in the UK we pay a premium for living rural - what is it like there? Can anybody give me a rough guide for prices or direct me to a site for this?

Regards,

Andy

It is the opposite in australia regarding house prices, the further you move away from major towns the cheaper it gets. Try looking on relestate.com for rural properties.

Which state do you intend settling in Andy?

I live on a 5 acre special rural block in Carramar; it is roughly 10 minutes from the beach, 10 minutes from the City of Joondalup and the train station.............. we are out in the bush to a degree............. but amenities aren't too far away so we have the best of both worlds. Properties around this area go for anything from $1.3m to $1.8m.

20-25 minutes away from here ........... inland a bit and further to the north....... you can pick up a 5 acre bush block for round the $250K mark. They have underground power, telephone lines, and the bores have been sunk and each block is issued with a flow rate and quality of water print-out. There are also sealed roads in the area.

Hope this helps.

I'm coming to live with you Bobcat. I will mow your paddock.

Those areas you mention for $250k does that include house or just the land.

If we decide to go for the luxury of having a job when we arrive we have looked at possibly living in Wanneroo, give me your honest opinion is it possible to get something there for no more than $500k dont need 5 acres but something good and family orientated would be nice.

Please help me with your valuable opinion is it a good area.

Thanks

Kaye

Hi Kaye

In the game your OH is in; finding work here in Perth will not be much of a problem. What's happened to your plans to head off over to Cairns?

For the $250K you just get the block of land......... we bought a 10 acre block in the same area last month ................. so that's my pension taken care of.

For $500K in Wanneroo I can get you a palace.

We lived in Wanneroo for 9 years prior to building in Carramar. Don't want to upset people who do live in Wanneroo......... but .......... Wanneroo is a much older area and to a degree it is very much run-down and there are evident signs of decay. A better option would be the more upmarket areas like Hocking; or Regent Waters but re the latter ............ it may be a hard ask to find something decent circa $500K?

Unfortunately Wanneroo has been neglected for donkey's years ......... and it was only within the last 18 months or so that certain pockets of Wanneroo got put onto deep sewerage? Meanwhile...... the sister City of Joondalup received preferential treatment and blossomed out of nothing to what it is today.

There's a brand new shopping centre being built right now in Wanneroo ......... not before time too. We used to boycott the current poxy shopping centre .......and nip over to Whitford's City prior to Joondalup's Lakeside SC being built.

Hope this puts you in the picture.

Cheers

Johnno

Wanneroo doesn't sound so promising could be the next up and coming though and make a killing

Still heart would love to go to Cairns but keep having my practical head on now and again re work situation, hubbys mate has a cousin who owns a pipe fitting company and can get him a start with good money, we have 2 young sons who will be with us and I wonder whether I am being selfish in expecting them to follow my dreams to go to cairns when a job is the priority. Have a few contacts in Cairns now but nothing like in Perth thinking of doing a stopover in Perth to check out options. What I want is for someone to tell me what to do

Oh I am so confused but at least we are narrowing down the options

Thanks

Are your lads interested in football? If so........ Woodvale Snr High School runs a soccer academy........... my 3 lads went there ........... magic school. The soccer programme wasn't up and running then so all 3 did a music scholarship as we lived out of the catchment area up at Carramar...... which is about 10-15 minutes drive down to Woodvale.

Our kid moved over to Cairns from Beldon; he's been there a couple of years now but is ready to move on. He's going to give Tassie a go once he sells his ranch in Cairns. I liked Cairns when I went over there to work offshore................ wouldn't like to live there though. It was nice and touristy.............. very picturesque........... we prefer to live in Perth though!

I think you'll have to flip a coin?

you are asking a mother of 3 geordie lads if they like football do you support PNE

Funnily enough all the places we have considered Cleveland in Brisbane, Cairns and Perth all have the schools with a soccer academy attached.

Guess I will have to flip that coin

Living rural isn't all it's cracked up to be. I built and lived on 5 acres for many years, until 18 months ago, I'm now in civilisation. The main thing I don't miss is the ever present danger of bush fires, we were nearly destroyed once with the fire passing our house on the other side of the road, I was very fire conscious with design of the house and layout of the gardens. Not having mains water is another thing I don't miss, relying on rainfall to fill the tanks, no deep sewerage either. It can be very lonely, no-one ever just pops in for a cuppa. I found it not very peaceful either, noise semms to travel more.
