Migrating to Perth - has everyone found jobs before going?

Hi all. Hoping to move to Perth in Jan next year - house sale permiting - but wanted to know if anyone had employment to start when they arrived and of so did you hunt for the job during the 'waiting' stage?

Neither of us has a job lined up. I'm a hairdresser and I am finding lots of jobs, but to start immediately so not worth applying yet, but can anyone give advice and/or recommend the best thing for OH to do? Wait or try now? He's a project manager in IT.

Thanks,

Nicki

Hi Nicki,

Myself and other half both had jobs to come to. I'm a nurse in mental health and emailed hospitals around the area I was thinking of living and expressed interest attatching my CV. I got a telephone interview and was offerred a position about 6 months before I arrived. My hubby applied for a job on seek.com, the company contacted him saying the position was for an immediate appointment but they liked his CV and could they keep it on file. A few months later they emailed enquiring if we had our visa - by then (October) we'd booked our flights for the January. OH had a telephone interview, and arranged to meet them when we arrived, 2 weeks after arriving he started work.

I'd find places to send your CV off to and put in an expression of interest, tell them if you've got your visa and when you hope to arrive, they may have positions coming up, or will keep you in mind. I'd say you've nothing lost trying to find a job in this waiting period at least it may provide you with a few contacts for when you get here and you can go and see them yourself.

Hi Nicki

We're hoping to be in Perth by Jan too. My OH is a Motor Mechanic - we've emailed his cv off to a few agencies, but they all just say 'contact us when you get here' Also, he's not keen on taking a job without meeting the employers first, and we want to have a good look at where exactly we want to live before he commits himself to anything. So, we're just going to go, but try and make a few contacts before we get there.

You'll have to let me know where you work if you carry on being a hairdresser - the only decent hairdressers I ever found in Perth were from the UK!!!

Bye for now

Jo

Hi
We are hoping to be in perth by Jan/Feb too! Oh is a plumber and hasn't lined up a job yet but hopefully once we are settled in we'll be able to look round. We are e-amiling a few places first but I think its just so that we feel like we are doing something on the job front. We're going over in October to validate so we will also look around a few companies and maybe circulate his cv...

Thanks guys for the replies. I have registered with SEEk and had loads of jobs come up but all for immeditae start, but as you've said, at least I'm getting to know who to contact. Its more for OH really, but I shall encourage him now to get sending his cv out, so thanks again.

Jo, I notice you're in Warwickshire - whereabouts as we're in Worcestershire - Redditch. We're not too sure where we'll live at the mo, but keep in touch as I most definitely want to carry on hairdressing and it would be great to meet othe PIO members!!!

Where are you hoping to go?

Nicki

Hi

We live in Nuneaton - nuff said!!!

We've been having a look at likely suburbs etc within our price range and think we might settle close to Rockingham, Warnbro area - houses seem to be good value and area seems nice, but it's difficult to really tell until we get there. We're thinking of renting a campervan for the first couple of weeks when we get there, so we can travel around and decide where we want to be, but everything depends on when we go, which of course depends on our house selling!!! There's so much to think about my head is constantly spinning!! I just wish we could click our fingers and be there now! I'm sure you know what I mean.

We know Perth a bit as we lived there for a short while when we went on Working Holiday Visas, but that was almost 10 yrs ago now and I'm sure there's been a lot of changes since then! Have you been before?

Bye for now

Jo
