It's hard to recommend areas, as everyone is different, what one person falls in love with it will put another person off.
I have heard that Armadale isn't a great area to live but that surrounding areas of Kelmscott and Seville Grove are really nice. A lot of English People tend to head to Joondalup, and down towards Mandurah/Rockingham.

Hubby won't have a problem finding work as contractors reckon they are still in mini-boom mode?
The heat will take a little bit of getting used to at first; but hubby will be impressed by the standard of conditions on building sites.
There is a lot of building going on both north and south of the river......... you'll have to decide where you want to live........... may have to flip a coin? Kids will enjoy their schooling over here................ so hubby's work and schools should be the deciding factor on where you end up living.
Your best bet will be to maybe rent a while until you get your bearings............ several newcomers have been blown away by houses they had a quick look at and have bought straight away............... only to find the house is magic but the area lets it down.
We made that mistake when we first arrived............... and it turned out to be a costly mistake too. We failed to do our research and paid the consequences........... mind you there was no such thing as the internet then.
Good luck with wherever you do eventually end up................ I'm pretty sure you won't regret your big move down-under.

Have to agree Bob Cat, someone told me that initially they thought they hated Aus - they'd bought a 'dream house' right away - ended up moving to a different suburb and loved it then. No good have a massive house if you end up not liking the area.

Thanks guys for your advice, and the web sites to check. and for your comments Bob Cat.......we are talking about renting a house first although some one told us to look at a holiday let instead...what are your thoughts on that I don't know what the difference is.

A holiday let would perhaps suit you best as I'm assuming your furniture would still be in transit on the seven seas? You need to get a hire-car more or less straight away....... and then go out exploring the burbs before finally deciding if your final destination is going to be north or south of the river?
A lot of my clients stay at one of the hotels in Hillarys; use that as a base for about a week while they get their bearings. It can work out to be quite expensive staying there long term though.
I'd advise you to keep an eye open too for anyone who is breaking their lease; that way you can take over the existing lease for a few weeks, months, or whatever time is left........... as opposed to signing a new long term lease which ties you down. Nothing worse than signing up long term for a rental only to find your ideal dream home to purchase a few weeks later?
If you are ready to rock and roll then by all means do go ahead and purchase a house...... but not without doing your homework first. Not sure if I mentioned it before..... but there is no colling off period here in WA. Once you sign the paperwork and the deal becomes unconditional......... then that's it. With that in mind you need to cover all angles. If you check out my webpage there are some pointers on there which explain the ins and outs re purchasing process to follow here in WA. It will give you some indication too as to different prices in different suburbs.

Perth?
Hi Lou. We are new to the site also. We hope to be in Perth area by Christmas 2008 which on the one hand seems ages away but with four children (Oliver 8, Luke 6, Ben 5 and Freya 16 months) I know that time will fly by. We are in the same position also. OH Rob is also a carpenter and as yet we have not found any work so we could hsare any hints there. We are presuming we will go south of the river because I understand it is generally cheaper and we are not city dwellers (Chichester, West Sussex) so probably a bit too daunting at this stage anyway. Have spent this afternoon researching suburbs inc Rossmoyne, Willetton and Bull Creek. They all sound nice and the schools I gather are very good also. We don't plan to buy straight away so are hoping to rent as part of the settling process. Got talking to someone from Perth at a wedding earlier in the summer and she also suggested holiday lets particularly as they are often furnished. We want to try and spend a little time concentrating on living in WA before we buy. At the mo, we are hoping to keep our house on over here just in case we don't settle but our research strongly suggests we will love it. Work is of primary importance in terms of paying the rent. Apparently the Unis have a lot of carpenters posts but haven't looked into this yet. What made you decide on WA? Have you been there before? We haven't but want to try something different for a while before the children get too settled into high schools in the uk etc. Obviously very worried we are making the right decision. There is good and bad everywhere you go. Trying to be very matter of fact about everything but pooing my pants really. I know just how badly the initial move will be for our children who are so well settled at school over here! Keep in touch! Jill

Hi Jill,
Thanks for your message, your situation seems very simular to our, we only live down the coast from you in Eastbourne, East Sussex so I know what you mean about the city!! I have been to Oz and Perth, spent about a year there........what is drving us to go is that we feel we the kids will have a better future there and we will have better quality of family life. Kris my husband has his own firm over here and some our business partner sister have gone to Perth with 3 small children and love it , they say the schools are great and you get morefor your money in the housing market. We did look into long and hard before deciding on Perth but with Kris trade skills and the nature of Perth we thought it would be best for us. We are currently waiting for a case officer to be aapointed to us and then to go for our medicals etc. We are going to sell one of our houses here in th UK and keep the one which we rebnt out as abit of a safety net as I would hate to go and then not be able to afford to come back....especailly as my husband hasn't been to Oz......although he is the one driving us to move. I do think its the right time to try something new as the kids are only young and they adjust so well (I have one in Year 1 at school and one starting tomorrow!!) I didbuy a book about moving and living in Oz which is designed for people emmigrating which I have found useful. How far are you down the line? If I find out anything about work etc I'll let you know.
