Hi, my kids aren't so little at 7 and 12 and we've only been here since January. But.... my daughter gets dropped off with her friends and goes round the mall to the cinema, my children walk to and from school with each other without incident and we have a couple of teenage boys on our street who quite willingly play footy with the boys who are my sons age. However, I'm sure that people will give you these experiences from other parts of Oz again... quite sad that these are things that wouldn't happen for our children in the UK and that we're so 'surprised that we can do them here'.
