I saw a programme recently which gave us a bit of an idea on house pricea in and around Perth. They were fairly pricey, even going further out of Perth. I'm not really a city person though so we likely avoid the main city, but does anyone have an idea on house prices generally in WA? Is WA pricier then the other states overall or does just depend where you go.
Also does anyone have any experience of the south of WA?
I am an Aussie born and bred but at the age of 30 came to the UK on a 12 month working holiday and have now lived in the UK for past 17yrs! - my husband is English and is in the process of applying for a spouse visa so that we can move back to Perth this time next year. House prices in WA have jumped significantly in the past 3 years but in comparison to the UK are still loads cheaper. You certainly get more space for your money in Oz. Perth house prices recently overtook Sydney but there is word in the air that Perth prices have peaked and are beinginning to settle and in some cases go down slightly.
Rockingham is much cheaper than Perth metropolitan but still close enough to all the transport links should you have to work in Perth. Depends what job you are looking at doing as far as moving further south - there are some excellent cities and towns south of Perth - Mandurah (my parents live there), Bunbury, Busselton, you could even go right down to Albany and Esperance and they have loads to offer - it really does depend what you are looking for in terms of jobs, schools and relaxation. Hope this helps you a little bit.

House prices in Perth at present are bordering on the ridiculous; accordingly listings if not sensibly priced are apt to stay on the market for quite a while. Mixed signals are emerging from the housing market; sales activity in the established residential market has definitely slowed down following on from last year's so called mini-boom! There is a Federal election pending too......... that can and most likely will have an impact on the housing market........... quite often such an event tends to curtail sales activity in the short term........... but how much further curtailing can our industry take? This is by far the worst I have seen the real estate market in my 10 years of house sales; in terms of sales activity and movement of property!
Currently it is definitely a buyer's market............ there are bargains galore if you know what to look for that is? From a real estate agent's perspective............ the market as is; is a shocker. Our phones don't ring as often; visitors to our Home Opens are few and far between. But we are used to this due to the cyclical nature of our industry.
This is a seasonal thing......... the weather doesn't help for starters because buffeting winds coupled with incessant rain tends to make people stay home with their feet up in front of the fire rather than trudge through home after home at the weekend!. Also; the market is generally slow to pick-up following the start of a new Tax Year (1st July to 30th June in Australia), it usually takes a couple of months to kick start itself into action.
Make no mistake; house prices in WA are high and there is no disputing that......... but in view of what we get for our money compared to house prices in other states ......... WA isn't so bad really.
What are you referring to re down south............... house prices or life in general down there?

We've only been here for 7 months but I have noticed that for sale signs are up for longer before the under offer signs go up. Like Bobcat says this may also be a seasonal thing too. I'm sor (only just!) as we live in Leeming which is 15 mins from the city and 20 mins from Freo - ideal location for us as I work in Armadale and hubby's base is north in malaga

I was referring to house prices, as to whether they drop significantly further away from Perth. However, anything you can tell me about life in general would be of interest too.
Thank you for all this information as well. It gives us an idea of what times of year could be best for buying.

We have been looking at Albany. The main reason we're looking south rather than north of Perth is really the temperature. Coming from our cold little island, we may be better starting where it is a little cooler.
My husband does electrical maintenance on any sort of production machinery. His main experience has been in machines that produce car parts and this has been his favourite sort of work; although he is currently in a factory that make drinks. It has been suggested that he could work with mining machinery, but I don't know if we would need to be further north for that.

Hi, i am a one step removed pom living in WA. My parents love the West although they lived in Victoria. My Mum so much that she moved here and has prospered since. WA prices are high but according to most all out there no where like the UK and there is space a plenty. For those interested we have associates who have a house near finished in Secret Harbour (50 or so K's to the south of Perth City). 4 x 2 nice with no agents, near the beach. Contact me if you have any interest and i can get more info.
