carajg
Hi all Can anyone clarify how the visa actually works! We have a permanent Residency Visa for Perth which expires in August 2017. We activated the visa back in March 2013. If we decide to go in June 2017, what happens when the visa expires in the August? Do we need to extend it? Also how long do you have to live in Oz to obtain permanent residency?
rammygirl
You have permanent residency, only the travel part of the visa expires in 2017. So if you come to Australia before then you can stay forever, but if you wish to travel outside of Australia after then you will need a resident return visa or citizenship. they have different rules but basically as follows resident return visa you will get a 5 year one if you have spent two of the last 5 years in Australia, a one year one if you can prove strong ties but have spent less than two years here or a 3 month emergency one if all else fails. citizenship requirements are to spend 4 years in Australia with no more than a year away in total and no more than 90 days away in the last year. One year must have been PR, you can't get citizenship from a temp visa.
