Hello.
we are a family of six and are considering relocating to Perth. My wife is a registered midwife and i am a chemical process operator. The kids ages are 16,14,10 & 7.We've had enough of the rain/floods & terrorist threats!!!
Could anybody give us some advice on whether to use an emigration agency & if so which one as there seems to be lots. Basically any thing that you might think useful. We decided on Perth after reading some info on the net & buying an emigration book from WH Smiths, also the housing affordability was another pull.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Reason: unfinished post.
Hi there, midwives are in short supply here, I work at Joondalup health campus NOR, you can make enquiries to kglenn@ramsayhealthcare.com.au she is our unit manager. The maternity unit is modern and care is of a high standard. If you want more PM me
Dear Lee & Julie
Bet your pleased you joined the PIO web site, what a great reply from fifer another newbie to the site! Prospect of a job offer!! Well that can't be bad!
I'd make the contact with fifer's people first if I were you and then there is always the possibility that they may sponsor your wife (and family of course!) to move. Ages ago I was sent some info on midwivery in Brisbane but not Perth unfortunately.
All failing we all have different opinions on agent or no agent, and depends if you need to safe as many pennies for the move as you can I suppose. Personally we have used an agent as we are a bit of a nightmare with paperwork and need someone to kick us up the backside to get it done, so for us an agent is a good thing!! Keeps phoning me, have you got ???? yet??? Fab for me! Agents do give some free advice so worth contacting some and asking their invaluable advice.
Midwives are in short supply like the UK and your wife will get a job anywhere. If you google hospitals in Western australia, you could apply to any of the hospitals directly. I guess if you know which area you want to live it would determine how far you'd want to travel to work. It's personal choice about an agent, certainly if you think your circumstances are complicated then yes the're worth their weight in gold, but your wife should easily get the 136 skilled visa as this will give you perm. residency. if you go via the sponsorship route you're tied to somewhere and if you don't like it can't move on.
It's been raining all week here in Perth!!

Hi just a quickie, i am also a midwife living in Perth and there is always jobs for midwives here. Desperate in fact. She could work 7 days a week !! It is the same in every state so easy to pick and choose. I am thinking of moving to Qld just because there is more to see and do and WA is very isolated and does not represent the rest of australia well. But it is a lovely place to start although our home prices are now the highest in Australia !! The home prices in Queensland are far cheaper than here at moment. Joondalup is a nice place to work (i have worked there for 17yrs now !) and is staffed by more than 60% poms !! so you would feel right at home !! but there are plenty of other places or do agency and get a feel for different hospitals. Agency's are sponsering too but you would have to work full time i think.
Happy to be emailed or send pm.
good luck
cheers Deb
Hi,
I've just come across this site and found your thread interesting. I have been to look around Glengarry hospital with a view to working as a midwife. I was interested in your comments and wondered if you could tell me more about Joondalup. Are there currently vacancies in the department? Is the set up the same as Glengarry i.e ward is mixed, Obstetrics/gynae/general surgery? I look forward to your response.
Thanks Judith
Hi Judith, yes there is still plenty of work for midwives at Joondalup and all over Perth. Yes Joondalup and Glengarry are both mixed wards obs and gynae although obs has been taking over lately. There are too many pregant bellies out there!!!
Joondalup will always take on new casual workers and I spoke to Karen Glenn the manager only this week who was desperately looking for staff for that day and she said there was no one to ring especially in the school holiday periond when most mothers who work casual will not put their names down for shifts as the kids are off school. So if you are in town I recommend to always start with either casual or agency to get the feel for a place and see how you like it before committing to a contract.
Karens number is 9400 9296 and she is a very easy going and easy to talk to lady so give her a ring. You can alt least just work the hours you feel like at the start with no pressure. You have nothing to loose and a big pay check to gain !! Especially this summer period when staff shortages are abound.
Best of luck
cheers Deb
Thanks for your email. I have actually emailed Karen Glenn today for some more info. I don't think I would get out here before July.
Are you British? Do you think that midwives practice the same in oz as in the UK. I am concerned that if you work in a private hospital you may lose your skills i.e the delivery itself, suturing etc if the consultant does all of it.
Is Joondalup private?
Hi Judith, Joondalup is mixed private and public so you will not de skill. As with most hospitals it has its faults but midwifery care is of a high standard. I work nights and have autonomy in my practice. I used to work in Scotland and the patients do not know how cushy life is here. Tvs and phones at all beds the max share is a two bed room.
