work in Perth

Hi Judith, If your coming out in July keep all your winter woolies it is really quite cold and windy here then. I would wait until later in year so at least you finish your summer and come here for another summer.
Joondalup was sold by the government about 11yrs ago and rebuilt. The deal stipulated that it must offer both public and private care. They are currently building a new private building to house the private side as this area is growing ever so fast the hospital is way way to small to cope in all areas not just mid. That will not be completed for another year and then the private birth area and ward will move across and we think we will be given the choice of which side to work in ??!! It is all guess work at the moment as no one is telling us much.
Birth suites are divided into 2 at present so public ladies go down one end of corridor and private the other. So yes you do get deliveries at both ends depending on if private consultant makes it on time or not and of course you get the public deliveries or share them with the jnr resident Dr. The two wards are in different areas and have seperate staff on most days and we flit between the two depending on who is the most busy and in need of the staff numbers.
In australia midwifes have never sutured but that has just started to change thru the nurses rego board and some of the english girls are doing the program to get themselves certified here to suture as they do find it quite frustrating when coming to australia and they are not allowed to suture. But i think that is about the only change you will find apart from the very brief home care given compared to UK.
Suturing is not part of the Aussie midwifery course so we are not taught at all. So in answer to other question ,no I am not British - all aussie- but I really appreciate the english midwives and their talents !! Even though I have been a MW for 21yrs I feel these english girls get a much better course and better experience than us aussie trained and I am always learning new ideas from them. In general they are all very happy and cheerful to work with as they have moved to a new life and are looking ahead to great times and that reflects in their work demenour.
Best of luck with your plans
cheers Deb

midwifery at Joondalup

Hi. Thanks for all the info. All very useful and positive. I emailed the manager yesterday but the email was incorrect and it was returned to me. Can anybody clarify her email address so that I can resend it. I have kglenn@ramsayhealthcare.com.au.

Cheers Judith

I think the advice to register with an agency is a good idea so as to get a feel for the hospitals in the area. Which agency is most commonly used in Perth? Also, if I do agency work, will I feel completely lost when I first go and work somewhere or are the staff quite accomodating towards new agency staff?

Sorry for all the questions but it is sites like this that you get the "real info" from.

Cheers Judith

Hi Judith Sorry for delay in replying, Merry Xmas hope you enjoyed your last cool one !! We had the hottest xmas days for 52 yrs and yesterday was 44.2 hottest december day ever according to the news reports !! We usually have those sort of high ones in Jan or Feb not Dec. Thank god for a swimming pool and air cond.
I spoke to Karen Glenn and here is here email addy - just reversed. glennk@ramsayhealth.com.au
I have done agency here in Perth twice in the last 12yrs and I hated it but boy does it pay really well. A popular one is WANA and Mediserve and jeepers cant remember at min (help me out here Susan !!) most hospitals ring them all when they need staff. There are in fact lots of agencys operating some deal with nursing assistants and others with different staff needs but WANA is ok.
I did find that in some of the bigger hospitals the ward staff were not at all friendly to agency and I hated the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing where to park and how to get in, and having to be orientated every shift to someplace different so for me coming back to familiar place was worth less $$ in my pocket for feeling more content. But everyone is different.
There is so much demand i am sure you could chop and change your mind with no drama and still be working every day of the week.
good luck
cheers Deb

Agency pays well, but you have to consider that out of that you need to put away for any leave you wish to take. You could also theoretically be working at a different place every shift, I agree with Deb that it's worth less $$ to have a bit of familiarity and also it helps establish some friendships etc.

midwifery

Hi Deb.

Thanks for that info.

I am actually in Perth at the mo so experienced the heat over Xmas. It is much more pleasant today. I am staying with friends in Darch that emigrated 2 years ago.We have had a fantastic three weeks and go back next week on the 3rd.

The things that you say about agency work and the unpleasantness that you experience in some work places are just what I remember from my agency nursing days years ago.It makes me feel apprehensive when you don't know the policies and how things are done and where things are. It's fine if you become a regular though. I just thought that it may give me the opportunity to try out a couple of units prior to commiting myself. I called AAA agency today as they advertise on Seek.com but I will look into the ones that you have mentioned. I will probably only do it for a month or two...(assuming I can get a contract elsewhere) just until I find my feet. I suppose the alternative would be to call your manager and come up and have a look around and get a feel for the place. You certainly sell Joondalup well!

I am planning in my head to be back here by Christmas 2008.

Anymore advice is always welcome.

Many thanks
Judith

Thanks for all your advice. I am back in the uk now. I went to see Joondalup hospital and met with Karen. It is lovely there and I am seriously considering applying now.
