Hi, we have finally decided on Perth(visa permitting) but are unsure of the best area - we have 4 young children aged 10, 9, 7 and 4 so we are looking for somewhere near schools and if possible a university. We were wondering if anybody had any suggestions, anything at all would be appreciated. Kerrie

Hiya Kerrie.
Few Perth residents on here. They'll be around later on I guess when they'll give you whatever info you need.
Hiya Kat, I live in Leeming which isn't far from Murdoch University. In the UK I lived in Preston which is fast becoming a uni town - not the same here at all.
Look on www.aussiemove.com it has a list of perth suburbs and a map to tell you approx where they are in relation to the city and each other. It's hard to suggest a place because what one person falls in love with another won't like for some reason. We knew we wanted to live south of river because I'd got a job in Armadale (but didn't want to live there or have to travel too far too work). We're 15 mins from the city, 20 mins from the beach at Freo and 25 mins from work (hubby has a bit further 'cos he travels north to work).
We also have a sister site - bit slow in getting going but we're trying to use it nontheless www.perthpoms.com Bob has done a post on there about Bull Creek which is next door to Leeming (so to speak) and I think the Colebecks are thinking of Willeton, again which is close by.

Hi Kerrie, I posted a reply for northern suburbs on 'wots ocean reef like' for wackyjacky.
It is a really hard decision to decide on north or south and i think you need to come and rent and look around 1st as it is a personal choice. What you like others may not.
The uni,s are north and south and one central in city, none east. It depends what you are studying or lecturering or what you want them for really as to which ones would accommodate you.
ECU is north and does teaching/sciences/nursing/psycology etc. Medicine is in city at University of Wa and some south. There is Murdoch uni and Notre dame uni in fremantle. Not all of the Uni,s offer all topics so you need to check their websites.
All the suburbs i mentioned on the ocean reef post are about 4 - 8 mins drive from ECU (Edith Cowan Uni) which is doubling in size in 2008. I am currently studing there, check out their website or pm me anytime. There are some really lovely suburbs around murdoch uni with good prices and schools. Maybe a lot further away from beach but nothing in Perth is any more than 30mins from beach at most or most furtherest out suburb.
good luck
cheers Deb
We're not in Perth (yet) but hope to be there by next July, visas permitting.
We have 3 boys (15, 10 & 6) so, like you, schooling is one of our main priorities - we've been looking around the Bull Creek/Willetton/Rossmoyne areas as the schools there are apparently very good. However, from the other side of the world it's a very hard task to make a final decision! We know that lots of driving around is on the agenda once we arrive!!
Hi, we are in a similar situation, we are trying to get there by end of this year. We have two children 8 and 6 and are worried about upsetting there education by picking the wrong area. Any advice on schools will help us too. Prices of houses will also be part of our decision. we have already had to change our kids schools twice already. hopefully this will be the last time before high school.
Thanks Ali for that info - really useful site that I had not used before. I have a short term role starting in the CBD of Perth - one of the very tall buildings - hopefully in the new year - reading some of the posts makes me think that it is high schools dictating where i should choose. Any views? Paying for private is not ideal as i would imagine finance will be tight to begin with. I don't mind travelling up to half and hour really. I am now going to check out rental accomodation next - hopefully once we have had a chance to look round, our rented location won't stop us putting the kids into a non - local school if necessary. I just did not want to move them from school to school un-necessarily.
I have 4 year old twins and a 16 year old daughter we have recently arrived and have been looking at schools and renting south of the river. We finally found a rental in Attadale (near Freo) the schools are very helpful (both primary and high schools). With rentals I would recommended getting a holiday let and then looking when you get here as what you see on the internet and what is actual avilable are 2 different things.
