primary and secondary schools in the Leeming area

Hello
Does anybody know what the primary and secondary school options are in the Leeming area or nearby? we are going to be renting there in mid July for about 10 weeks whilst we look for a more permanent rental. Any advice on schools in the area would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Alan & Kay

Hi Alan

Where abouts are you renting. (You're not staying in Flint Court by any chance are you?)
The schools do have catchment areas apparently. My children are 12 and 7 and both go to Leeming Primary School. Before we arrived I emailed the 3 primary schools in Leeming Banksia (didn't reply), West Leeming (who told me it would depend where I lived) and Leeming Primary - who replied with a really informative email telling me what years the children would be in etc. First impressions count and after a number of emails with the principle (who set up a pen pal for Alex my eldest), we decided that the kids would be comfortable and looked after.

The children have really settled there Tom 7 who was indifferent to school in UK "loves" it - I never thought I would use that word in a sentence about Tom and school!!. Education is more relaxed here and I'm trying to take the same approach - the children are relaxed, happy and learning, it's just not as regimented as in the UK with lots of homework. Tom doesn't think he's done any mental maths here, but it's obvious from some of the activities he's done that he has - it's just not been done in a 'test setting.

The website for the school is www.leemingps.det.wa.edu.au and you can email the principle at Leeming.PS@det.wa.edu.au The principal is called Graeme Sassella-Otley

There are lots of children from different nationalities starting at various times and you're never the 'new kid' for long.

Alex is going to Leeming High School in January which has a good reputation and is looking forward to that.

If I or the kids can be of any help, please just ask. I'll also get you some groceries for your arrival if you need me too!!

Ali

thanks for all the info Ali, that was really great.

we have a 16 year old girl who will have finished her GCSE's here before arriving in Perth, and wants to study Media Studies, not sure if she can do this through a High School or just TAFE. we also have twin boys aged 3 who will be starting 'kindy' next Feb, does the primary school you mentioned run a 'kindy'?

we are booking our initial rental through Lynn on the 'move to Perth' site and will be staying at Riley's, but not sure of the address as yet.

thanks so much for the offer of the groceries, i might just take you up on that, and if you are nearby it would be great to meet up.

again, thank you
Kay

The address is 9 Flint Court - it's the same one we rented. It's a good location. We're almost round the corner (about a 10 min walk away)

If you look on www.aussiemove.com. you can find links to the schools - why don't you email the high school - I'm sure they'll be happy to give you some advice.

thanks so much for you help Ali, it's great knowing someone else has stayed there! Leeming Primary have already got back to me and emailed me the enrolement forms for the boys and we are investigating Leeming Senior High or TAFE for Kim. Do you happen to know if she would be legalling obliged to enter school when we arrive in July until the end of the school year in Dec? As she leaves school here next Friday 22nd June, not sure how gutted she would be if she 'had' to return to school!! poor thing.

Not sure but Leeming High will know but they break up in December any way and I'd probably wait myself. I did notice a sign for TAFE centre as I was passing Uni the other day too.

The email for Leeming high is leeming.shs@eddept.wa.edu.au and web-site is www.leeming.wa.edu.au Alex is thrilled they do French as well as Japanese, she wants to do French again whilst dad wants her to carry on Japanese as it'll be 'more useful' living nearer to Japan than France lol - I feel a battle coming on!!!!

When do you arrive?? PM me if you want me to get you some stuff for when you arrive - bread, milk, juice etc., and you can come round for a drink (we'll give you a couple of days to get over the jet lag!!). There's only kiddy style duvet covers in the rental for the single beds - your daughter may want to bring her own lol

Alanmac,

Just a thought - we emailed the rental regarding internet access, initially he said we'd had to pay but then we got it for free - worth asking as it really helped us in those first few weeks being able to contact by email etc.,

Thanks for that Ali, we seem to be having a bit of time delay with replies from the Rileys at the mo but I'm sure we'll get there in the end.

Greg actually works and lives on Christmas Island out in the Indian Ocean - he will get back to you sometimes it takes a couple of days.
