Spiders, Snakes and things that move.

After some advice from others on here and also lots and lots of searching on the net hubby and I thing that Ocean Reef and surounding areas would be an ideal place for us......but of course we will be coming over for a looksee first!

Hubby has no fear of spiders or snakes but because he has watched too many films he seem to be petrified of living in Oz because he thinks he will get chased around the house by a spider!!!!!

Can anyone who is actually living the life tell us just how bad the creepy crawly things actually are.

Thanks
Kelley

Hi

I live in Ocean Reef. The spiders you will find everywhere. They are not to much of a problem. The Red Backs can be dangerous for young children and the elderly. You just need to make sure that you have a good cobweb cleaner and that will keep them at bay.
Honestly , they are not a big issue. Snakes on the other hand are all to be treated as dangerous. We dont see to many of them either. They are most active in the summer , where there is water (lakes etc) and in the bush and sand dunes. I tell my kids to keep of the dunes in summer. In 7 years I've seen 3 snakes. I dont preceive them to be a threat or issue.

ok here is the honest truth of what i have experienced so far and what i have heard from friends here in oz,

inside the house
lots of geckos ... they not too bad
cockroaches.... had them in the shower/cereal packet/in the tinfoil tube on the curtains etc ... some of them fly too i hate them
only had normal type spiders inside nothing to creepy yet touch wood...
inside the loft/roof
we hear possums in the loft quite often we have also had them rattle on the front door and also found a dead one at the end of our driveway...
in the garden
seen loads & loads of red backs.... avoid them
only seen 2 huntsmen.... dont like them
mossies.... a real pain
fruit bats..... always flying around

what i have heard from friends....
a chap had a leek in his roof through to the kitchen and wet stuff came down it turned out a 8ft python had woken from hybanation and peeeed

another friend who lives in bush area had a 8ft python in his garage

only snake i have seen was a brown snake baby one an it was already dead.... thank lordy for that !!!

on the beach there can be a few nasties....

but all these horrible creepies are made up for when you see a kangaroo or koala or rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras and all the other pretty birds that come into your garden

you just have to try not to worry, im am one of the biggest if not the biggest scardie cat when it comes to spiders etc i guess they were here before us !!!

Not seen any snakes or redbacks. Don't know how the cockroaches get in but they're bloody big ones. Hate mossies with a vengence - I have a terrible reaction to their bites - so smell of eau de repellant whenever I go out in the evening.

We've also had a couple of crickets get into the house

Hi Boova,

I lived in Oz for a year and in all area's and honestly, its ok. And you DO get used to it. The only issue I had was with the cockroaches, I will never ever get used to those little blighters running out (I'm going back with Boyf to Sydney) they are so vile! They give me goosebumps just seeing them! But in some small way, I just had to accept they are always going to be there and you do your best to keep them at bay.
Chris (my boyf) being the typical Aussie is totally laid back about these things, potentially these creatures can kill you, only if you aggrevate them or turn over rocks in the bush! They don't come running towards you thinking KILL! Its only natural to be afraid of them
but be wary and careful and you shouldn't have much trouble. its wierd but when you are actually there, it doesn't really cross your mind that much. It did me for a while but like anything, it becomes part of the way of life out there. I am a girl and totally a scaredy cat! The birds that sing in the morning and the amazing beauty that Oz has seriously makes up for it.
Just be cool and you'll remember these posts when you get there!

Hi there

We have been in Perth for 3 weeks now and living fairly close to Ocean Reef in Mindarie. So far we’ve not experienced anything nasty other than a few ants. My husband nearly stood on a snake early one morning down the beach when we lived here years ago but it was more scared of him.

We did get our house sprayed though which you can do really cheaply and easily.

Thank you
Alyson

Hi everyone, boy you have all given me a good laugh this morning reading this stuff.
I cant believe you get NO animals or insects or spiders in Uk ??
I have lived here for 42 yrs and I have lived in city and country towns and have seen 2 snakes in 42 yrs !!
Hundreds of people sunbake and they do not share their towel with wildlife. The worst you will get on the beach is sand flies or midgies that nip and you wont know about them til you get home and see bites. There are snakes in the back dunes but why are you up there?? Deserted beaches get more but you wont be on them either?? will you??
There are always spiders in my house but they are not poisinous ones. I have 3 boys who are always out the back collecting bugs and they know to stay way from spiders an report any redbacks and they have shown me one in the last 10 yrs!! and yes you can get your house sprayed every 6months by lots of different company's. It works a treat and keeps nearly everything away. There are child friendly sprays too.
cocharoaches stay away when you put the baits out around your furniture which can be brought in all supermarkets cheaply.
It really is not a drama and a good shoe kills everything !! LOL
have fun
cheers DEb
