Hi Stacy
I visited Geraldton nearly 20 years ago, on the way to Monkey Mia which is one of teh "must see" places on earth.. Back then, Geraldton was a One Camel Town consisting of a campsite, an Aborigine settlement and very little else.
However, that was YONKS ago and the place has come on by leaps and bounds since then. Please see here:

One of my dearest friends lives in Dallyellup Beach, near Bunbury. My (now dead but much loved) god-parents owned a sheep-station near Albany.
Given your house-budget, personally I would not waste time around Perth Central. If it were me, I would go South because your time is limited and the distances are shorter South of Perth. Plus the scenery is green and lush, even in their Summer.
North of Perth, if you like desert scenery there is plenty of it to be seen. The distances are huge too compared to the UK or Ireland, but the roads are first rate (if empty) and diesel is very cheap there.
North of Perth, Kalbarri has amazing geology. It also has whale-watching on Ningaloo Reef. Monkey Mia is a huge, sheltered bay and the dolphins that swim in to it are a) protected and b) tame. You can buy fish from the Rangers to feed to the dolphins. You stand in water knee-deep and the dolphins will come to you - on the scrounge for the fish. THey are HUGELY intelligent creatures and they have Monkey Mia well & truly Organised to suit themselves! The only reason they haven't got a dolphin i/c the Tourist Board is because they haven't thought of holding the meetings in a boat out in the bay! I kid you not.
Cheers
