Sell me Perth

Loads of you are there already - and I'm thinking about joining you. Me, that is, and my husband (43, a flooring man), and my girls (13 and 12, one team sports mad - netball, football, hockey, and the other horse mad). I love sunlight, beautiful beaches, friendly seas, and want the girls to walk to school and have a great and free social life. Is Perth (or the coast around it) the place for us?. Help me!!

Hi

Sounds like Australia is the place for your girls! Australians are BIG on sports, your girls will get lots of opportunities and encouragement to play whatever sport they like. Having horses is a real possibility for anyone here, they seem to be more affordable than in Britain. You have a choice of buying a bigger property and keeping your horse on your property or buying a horse and using adjistment (think that's what you call it). Unless things have changed a lot in the UK the only people who had horses when I was a kid was farmers kids or the rich kids.

Lots of work in the building trade in Perth,so your husband will be right. Lots of sunshine, beautiful beaches and good swimming if the conditions are right. There are surf life savers on a lot of the beaches, swimming is a big thing here and kids need to be able to swim to enjoy the lifestyle. In my opinion kids seem to be'kids' longer here and can enjoy as bit more freedom. Australians are big on families and there are lots of social events for kids....pool parties for their birthday....can't get that in the UK. There are normally socialgroups organised at school too. We've been here for 3 and a half years, we love it here and think the quality of our lives has improved hugely. We now live in Victoria where the weather isn't quite as good but in perth, the weather is fantastic. For 6 months of the year the skies are blue and the sun is shining, I spent the first 6 months being amazed that it was another nice day  Even the winters are nice in Perth.

Not been in Peth long but we know we made the right decision. I have 12 year old girl and 7 year old boy, both love it here and have settled in really quickly. I'm in the process of organising riding lessons for my daughter (she had them in the UK) $40 for an hours lesson, my son has signed for a soccer team, they walk to and from school, the beaches are great and no matter what time we've been it's never been crowded. I'm know other parts of Aus are equally as nice and so you'll be spoilt for choice.

Hi Ali,
going to start the process of applying for a skilled visa next month, we are also thinking about Perth the more I read about it the more i can't wait to get there. How long did it take for the whole process to go through, did you go through an agency, how much did it all cost, where about in Perth are you? Going with husband Gary a welder and son Josh 8.

Have you started applying for your visa yet? We are going to start the process next month. Husband Gary is a welder we have a son Josh who is 8. Any ideas where about in Perth you fancy? We like the sound of Mandurah, Rockingham and Joondalup.

Hi there, me and hubby arrived in sept 06. stayed in holiday apartment Cottesloe (posh and pretty) and moved to Fremantle - I love it there but recently moved to Rockingham (lots of poms here - and in Joondalup). If you have kids freo is not best. the suburbs are better probably. We LOVE it here - amazing beaches and lifestyle. alice.x

Hi Ange,

Sorry for the delay in answering your post. We're in Leeming which is south of river and near Bull Creek and Canningvale. We love the area, older and established, good schools, 15 mins from the city and 20 mins from the beaches at Freo.

I'm a mental health Nurse and hubby electronics enginner - we came on my skills (136) because the process for nursing seemed so much easier. The whole thing took 7 months - felt like 7 years but when you look back wasn't really that long.

Both got jobs sorted before arrival - we searched for companies and emailed them our CV's, hubby applied for a job via seek.com, they wanted someone to start right away but emailed him a couple of months after and said when are you going to arrive we may have a job. Both had telephone interviews.

The children love it - as long as Tom can play soccer he'd love it anywhere, my daughter Alex said the other night that she doesn't think of the UK as home anymore and is glad we came - both are really settled in school and home and enjoying it here. Tom does say that school is "easier" but I think he's just happy he doesn't have a mental maths test every week!!
