Can anyone tell me anything about Jandakot, please? I've found it on a none-too-informative map, but that's about all I've mnaged to find. I'm thinking of taking a trip out there later ths year to visit my sister, who lives there, and I am wondering what to expect. :?:

Has NOBODY heard of this place Jandakot? :?: Or are you all hinting that it is a pit of a place, only with cheap land? :!:
I've no idea. Sister has a posh-looking house with several bedrooms, pool etc plus 5 acres.
Which seem to be devoted to some sort of miniature private zoo, since she has a passion for anything that lives in water, or has feathers, or has four legs. No joking. Last time I visited there were some truly ghastly-looking white creatures in an aquarium. Enquiry revealed that these primordial beasts were Mexican Walking Fish. Interrogation revealed that they turn into Salamanders if allowed to lave the water and sit on a stone in the air. "And what is a salamander?" "A newt" I was informed. "What the eff do you want with a NEWT?!" Apparently Ken Livingtone (yes, truly, Red Ken, Mayor of London etc) is the World's Leading Authority on Newts. Apparently he and sister have exchanged endless correspondence about The Care, Welfare & Repair Of A Newt. Jeez :!:
So you can see why I'm doubtful, dear readers.....!
Has anyone got a steer about Jandakot, pleeee-eease?!
PS: I should add that Sister didn't live in Jandakot last time I went there. Then, she lived in Sampson. Not sure where that is except it wasn't too far from Freo - about half an hour on the bus, I recall.
Hi Gill,
not much there I'm afraid, it has a private airport which is very busy, the area is quite expensive with nice houses etc, but not much else, though you are near the city in fact everything's close, Perth's a beautiful place and well worth a look. go to Kings Park you'll love it also the city is great too , having said that its winter here now so the weather's a bit hit and miss, this is usually our wet season with temps in the mid 60's but you should still have a good time,
hope this helps,
Davy

Hello Davy
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to reply. I had found out about Jandakot airport (which as you say seems to be the only feature of the place!) It is the main base of the RFDS in WA, and some of their planes look terrifying, so I plan to ask them whether visitors are allowed to go for a look-see. It is a service that I really admire.
We're planning to visit at Christmas. Sister is a busy housewife with two kids aged 9 & 12. On previous trips, Jim & I have been bored because we're there as tourists and want to explore, whereas sister is busy with her day-to-day stuff. I think this time, we'll hire a car so that we can explore on our own more easily.
I was beginning to fear that Jandakot is minus tourist-attractions because even the Internet has barely heard of the place! But now that I know for sure, I can add a car-rental to our Must Do list, which should solve the problem.
So thanks very much to both you and Tim for confirming what I had begun to suspect. We can now plan accordingly.
jandakot used to be out in the sticks, but Perth has grown up around it so now it is in the burbs. 5 acres there is a good plot which will have realised huge capital growth over the last few years. Maybe even an option to subdivide...
Jandakot Airport is the busiest in the southern hemisphere over 400,000 movements per year. Nearly all light singles, both fixed wing and helicopter. Singapore Airlines and China Southern train their pilots there becuase of over 300 fabtastic flying days the location provides every year.
There isn't much in way of restaurants. Chins in Leeming does yum cha, but you need to head to freo or into town for the good stuff.
From Jandakot you are near enough to the freeway to make Mandurah a day or two visit. A pleasant seaside town with good fishing and crabbing.
You are also near Rockingham. The town itself has nice beaches but the best bit was to be Rockingham Dolphins (Rockinham Wild Encounters now). You can go out on a boat with them and swim with dolphins and chuckle at the penguins (though they call them tim-tams here :) )
Freo prison is great as is the maritime museum.
I am connected to the tourist industry in Perth, you can PM us for more advice.
If we did miss you, hope you enjoyed your stay. :D
