Rockingham?????

Hi,

Hopefully in sept/oct time me, oh and children (10,4 and 2) will be in perth. i have been researching areas like mad and really cant make a decision on NOR or SOR. I love the look of Ocean reef but if you compare the prices to say Rockingham SOR there is a massive difference!

Can one of you guys already there help me a bit here with nice areas, schools etc that are on the coast. Also dont want to be too far out to feel isolated and preferably up to an hour away from the city. I would also like to be near good shops

Hi Kerry, What a coincidence, we were looking at both these areas. We are hoping to get to Mandurah due to switching out visa options, but we plumped for Rockingham in the end due to the cost of houses, easy to get to the CBD and also there seemed to be a good choice of shops in Rockingham http://www.rockinghamshopping.com.au/home.

do you know what the schools are like and the area in general? It seems you do get a lot more house for less money but is there a reason for this that i dont realise??!!! lol

I am sure there is a reason for this.

Rockingham seems to get a bit of stick on here, do some searches on here - I cant really comment, just like you I am still reserching NOR v SOR.

I have been to both places 4 times, We stayed in Ocean Reef 3 time and Rockingham once.

At one point we where told that my husbands job could be moved to Perth.

From my point of view and my kids 3 years ago, they told me they did not want to live in Rockingham at all. They did not like it at all it remined them of the UK kids in hoddies on sreet coners. They loved it in Ocean reef and would have lived there.

Im not saying Rockingham is a bad place Im just going by what my kids said, and at the age of 13, 15 and 16 at the time I listened to them.

We didnt move by the way we stayed In Sydney.

I've lived in the Rockingham area for 30 odd years, it's a lovely place to live and raise a family, I did. It's not as built up as the northern suburbs, that's the only difference, it has the same good and bad points just like the northern suburbs. Bit slower pace of life down this way too. Roughy same travelling distances into the city, both have a train service, freeway, etc.

We moved from the UK to the Rockingham area last September and we love it here, its close enough to get into the city and the trains are really good too.

Hi Kerry,
we arrive in Perth on October 5th and are renting a house in Rockingham for the first few months. We went over on a reccie 2 years ago and I loved Rockingham but I did only see the seafront area.

As for schools, I have put my kids' names down for the two catholic schools, St Bernadette's in Port Kennedy and Star of the Sea in Rockingham. You do have to pay for these schools but they do seem to have a good reputation. I also have three children who will be aged 7, 3 and 15 months when we arrive in October.

When we were over on our reccie we looked around lots of the suburbs SOR and I have to say I thought they were great - very family orientated which is what I want. Also, the city isn't too far away (about 45minutes in the car) and they have a great train line that is cheap to use.
