Smile New member moving to Northern Territory

Hi,

Just wanted to say a quick hello. My family will be moving to Darwin in December as my partner will be starting a new job with the NT government. After reading the forums while waiting for our visas, I have seen that not many people seem to go to the NT. Any advice from anybody who has been there would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hiya

Welcome to the forum.

I've just returned from Darwin.business/holiday.
It was my first visit.

It is hot and humid - hope you can manage it.
There are 2 seasons - the "Dry" and the "Wet"

Darwin is booming with building everywhere - lots and lots of apartments.
Property prices are high and climbing still - hopefully you are on good money.

There did seem to be quite a few scruffy areas in the outer suburbs - so research is essential.

Lots to do on an evening - Darwin central buzzes!
Go for a bite and a beer at Lizards Bar at the end of Mitchell Street - in fact you will have fun on most parts of the street.
Nearly all year round you cannot swim in the sea due to the box jelly fish and Stonefish + crocs in the mangroves.

Darwin is a place of it's own - hard to compare against other towns/cities - it is only fairly small.

Have fun!!!!!!

We were due to move to Darwin at the end of this year but this has been postponed a year.

We did a reccie to Darwin in April, at the start of the dry season, and I must admit I loved it! We will probably end up living in Palmerston as that is where husband's job will be. And I agree you will need to do some research as to places to live. We mainly went to do a reccie of the schools to find which one suited us best as this was our main concern with moving up there.

Where we live at the moment, it is a good hours drive to the bigger shops or Melbourne etc, so it was nice in Darwin as it never seemed too far to anywhere! Mindil Beach market was great and there are some great places to eat in Darwin. Stokes Hill Wharf is nice place to go and eat and Casuarina Shopping Centre has all the shops you need and is nice and air conditioned!

I know we will struggle with the wet season and it will take some getting used to but if it was that bad, nobody would live there!
