Hi

We too are going to Tassie on a 175 visa and hope to be there sometime early next year. We are looking at around Kingston to Snug area.

There is a great website www.tchange.com.au which you may not have seen.

Good luck with everything and there are a few on PomsinOz that are in Tasmania and I'm sure they will reply.

Emma

GREEETINGS FROM A SUNNY & BLUSTERY TASSIE - Well it was before it got dark - just to advise: Sunrise around 6am Sunset around 8pm, October 15, 08!

Chuffhead welcome to PIO - in case you don't know, this opinionated Bear (Herbster, if you don't mind) Yes! Herbster, moved over to Tasmania May 31, last and moved into our stunningly situated rental June 30th - well when the furniture arrived along with the other bears - Bear Reunited!

I work casually in Snug, so can vouch for that being a cool little place with a friendly Fruit & Veggie stand AND the BEST Butchery. Kingston is a very neat little town, with just about everything that you'd need, Big W, independents, lots of small businesses - also lots of boat building, servicing around here - hubby can probably even find a job right there!... My OH is an Electronics specialist but has moved into civil engineering in the admin dept of a national co, but it is over an hour's drive through the city to the far northern suburbs, so we have bought our first home closer to his work...- AND GUESS WHAT LUCKY 1ST TIME HOME BUYERS - IF YOU GET HERE within a year to do the deal, 1st Time Buyers Grant has doubled - unfortunately doesn't help us - which would have made a HUGE difference - hubby could have got his ham string injury fixed & I could have bought a 2nd runaround! But anyway we're moving away from the waterfront to the hills & a hobby farm... Nov 21st - Amazing - couldn't have done that in UK!

Anything I can help you with - just ask away, I'll do what I can, with Herbster's able assistance!

l went to Tassie for a holiday once, probably has the best scenery anywhere in OZ, snow capped mountains, green countryside, spectacular ruggard coastline, great if you like the outdoors and national parks, camping hikeing that sort of thing. The climate is like England but with less rain so don't move there if you want warm sunny weather, l noticed Hobart and southern tassie was colder then Launceston and the northern part. As its got a small population and is an island you might feel a bit isolated or cut off from the rest of OZ or the world, but its got affordable housing, low crime , little pollution and traffic.

Cool A slice of life

G'Day from a gorgeous Sunny Tasmania - We doooo get 'em! And it's surprising how soon you get used to them, because already I'm thinking - YES! but has the wind stopped!?? The wind can drive you crazyyyy IF YOU ARE IN AN EXPOSED POSITION AS WE ARE HERE lovely views, but the WIND!

To talk about Life in Tassie is a bit subjective - but I'll just try & give some illustrations without being too slanted - I like to KNOW the FACTS & then compare those with my Needs, Wants, Hopes & Expectations... As I said current hours of DAYLIGHT 6-8pm, not bad when you compare it to places further north - that's the 1st thing I wanted to know (& NO one would tell me!) AND AMAZING NIGHT SKIES - no light pollution, stunning...
Have you spent much time in Tassie - did you DO the Tour? Don't be too influenced by a few xtra degrees one way or the other, because there is more to Life here than whether you'll need a scarf or fleece! Like us you don't have to worry about school catchment areas, etc.. now whether they will have any influence over your future plans...? It is worth bearing in mind distances to travel between venues. I sort of compare Tassie with Wales, where the roads just run up the Valley & you can't just drive over the top in a straight line - it's very much like that, so if you live in rural areas, chances are there are not going to be lots of different routes in & out... So places might look close on a map, but further actually by road cos of the hills & lack of thru' roads!

Hobart, as Cities go has a lot of charm we really like it, it's friendly & cool, very relaxed - we're not City People, but it's really great having a town on your doorstep that has everything basically within walking distance, ample reasonably priced parking & if you can get in early enough - 1st hr free in some car parks. It always has a nice buzz about it, a bit like a mix between Durham & Exeter - but without all the centuries of Heritage! Salamanca Market - I know, some of the locals say it isn't what it once was - that it's not so LOCAL - but if you like street markets, more like the Continental style than bawdy, brash British ones, you'll love it & it's a great place to meet friends, have a leisurely shop & stroll, pick up breakie, brunch - whatever your pocket can afford - or be really cheap, spend nothing but still enjoy a great Saturday morning out! Then you can walk into town or along the waterfront... that's all ear-marked for redevelopment - HOPEFULLY not into a silly hospital, prime seafront real estate should not be given to a Hospital! Daft Government's are pervasive, I'm afraid!
Getting all your essential services sorted when you first move out is a doddle - if you have access to a town like Kingston - we did every thing in 2 mornings - could have done it all in a day had we wished - every thing's round the corner from each other - none of this waiting in line for days to get Official stuff done, like UK...
Driver's License, Medicare, the Works - Tax file number, apply on line, and every one so friendly! AND while I remember we actually have proper dedicated POST OFFICES out here that have a charter & everything so won't be pulled screaming & kicking out of the heart of your local village & left to die in some back water newsagents... Every Suburb (Village) of consequence has one & very useful they are - I even bought my mobile phone in one..
Buying our car was GREAT the dealership are amazing... Our first service was FREE! I have to Big Up! DJ Motors in Glenorchy as their service is outstanding - they text you the day before to remind you of your appointment & arrange everything as you LIKE it - OH dropped car in & then they chauffeured him to work & collected him when his car was ready... They always call back to make sure you are happy with the service you received, it's amazing... Any of this sounding like Britain in the '70's? I DON'T THINK SOOO. There's Broadband most everywhere & although we are in a gorgeous rural location over looking Bruny Island, we have the best BB connection we've ever had. The major phone Co think they have things wrapped up, like BT Back in the Day - but we found a way round them & have a much cheaper & superior service from a company called Internode well worth checking out - SOOOO much cheaper & flexible than The Big Guys...

Well that's it for now... It would help if you have specific Q's... but it has to be one of the cleanest, freshest places on earth - the air is great, the Wildlife everywhere - not just in a book or some Preserve - it's in my garden AND we can actually afford to buy our 1st home here which we couldn't in UK.... Only thing about starting from scratch... Too much my fingers don't work any more!

x - I THINK THE wind HAS STOPPED!

oh this is great, you so lucky to be there

Tasmania is definatly for us, we come from cornwall so it sounds like a home from home....The weather sounds great too, we did our research and did like the idea of having seasons, we love the sun but my friend lives in QL and the temp kills her some days....so as its hotish most of the time, with a bit of WIND and rain,we will be happy with that........AMAZING NIGHT SKIES....cant wait to see these!!!

Will send you a PM with any questions we have because the visa is in the hands of the gods, we can now concentrate on exactly where we want to live....initial thoughts are launceston or outskirts of hobart, but we haven't really thought about it much till now.

Also if you know, caan we open a bank account from the uk and save in it now, or will we have to be there to sign things before we can put money in......

Thanks for everything
Erica & Alan
