Smile Chef headed for Perth

Hi All

First post so be gentle with me....

I am a Chef, heading for Perth - I passed TRA back in April and applied for a 175 in June. (Not using an agent). There's me, the lovely Mrs and we have three children.

Just put the house on the market (trying my best not to have to go on a validation holiday next year).

Anyone a Chef...or headed for/in Perth??

P

Hi there,

We're heading to Perth hopefully Nov/Dec this year. We have accpted an offer on our house this wek so it's all systems go.

'We' is me, OH and our 5 year old son. We are going out on a 457 visa & both have IT jobs to go to. The big stress now is finding a school/suburb to settle in before the new term starts 2nd Feb.

Good luck & hope to see you on the other side (of the world)

Jules x

We went on a reccy in June & to be honest didn't really find anywhere we wanted to live for sure. We had thought we wanted to live in Perth Hills but had a complete change of mind on that, we then looked at the Duncraig area but we weren't happy with the houses we could afford. We had a big re-think and had a look at the new builds at Butler & Secret Harbour - we loved the houses but had niggling doubts about being so far from the CBD & so back at home we're back to square one. We have been thinking about Willetton (because of the schools) but now thinking of enrolling DS in an independent school in Fremantle & living in a suburb near there. We'd love to live in Fremantle but that's out of our league price wise

Where were the places you liked? Any suggestions gratefully received!

Jules

We stayed in Clarkson, liked Butler/Quinns/Kinross/Hilary's even as far up as Yanchep/Two Rocks. Lower down Trigg was very nice, but we are thinking about Beldon or Craigie due to the good transport links to CBD. Clarkson was the end of the line, and we found trains to be cheap and efficient. We haven't got to the stage where we are thinking (or is that worrying) about schools....yet! (Give us time...house and visa first) :)

We stayed near Hilary's in Sorrento & loved it but again way too expensive. We did like Butler - it was the first place we found we both liked and could afford!

We were advised to avoid Clarkson because of the High School there but it's hard somtimes to separate fact from opinion.

I don't know Beldon or Craigie so I'll look into them - thanks!

hiya my hubby is a chef

we originally wanted to go to perth as we have family there but found it too expensive. i may add that we have never been and our family there would loved us to have gone though our research on paper shows we perhaps could not afford to live there. our relatives live in sorrento and heathridge. can i ask as you have been on a reccie - how did you find the availabillity of jobs ? and salarys ? our research from the uk shows the average wage in perth and adelaide are the same though the cost of living/housing in adelaide is certainly cheaper. of course the chances of my oh landing an excellent job paying the right wage is likely in perth and adelaide we decided to go with average salary expectancy and live on the safe side.

i would love to hear your experience from your reccie though after much turmoil we are going to adelaide we fly on the 30th oct so i suppose there is no going back but would be very interested all the same.

thanks and good luck

sjs

Hi SJS!

We found there were tonnes of jobs advertised for Chef's (we got The Western Australian on a Wednesday and Saturday). The wages seemed very good compared to over here (I am a Head Chef of 1 years and have won awards for my restaurant and still don't get anything near the salary that was being advertised)?

We have family out there and they reckon housing is overpriced at the moment after (like us) having a "boom" for the last couple of years, so we are hoping by the time we get out and have rented for a while we might have more options? Even so I think we can live comfortably on just a Chef's salary, but lets just hope the Mrs will also get some work too (to keep her out of mischief if nothing else!)

Good luck!

P
