WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hi am new to this site and just wandered if someone can give me some information about Melbourne. My husband's dream to move to oz but am not so sure.........( no friends/family) Anyway he got himself a job in northen western hospital and we were told we should get our visa finalised within 2 weeks!!! OMG
What am after really is for someone to give me info on schools ( 2 kids 7 & 2), good areas to live etc.
any advice would be much appreciated
Hi.. we moved to Melbourne from Perth a year ago.. We live in Preston (inner North) and have 2 boys(14&17). Prston is a good area to live, it borders on to busier suburbs like Brunswick, Northcote and Fitzroy with good transport (train and tram) to the city. We found you get more for your money out here and it is a bit more "family". As for schools, don't panic..we moved over, took our youngest to the local high school and he started the following monday...Good Luck..You wont regret it! Colin
I guess you mean the Western Hospital in Footscray do you. Well there are plenty of nice areas where you could live fairly close by. My friend's son is a specialist at the Western and he lives in North Melbourne and its easy access for him. Altona, Kensington is a nice niche. Ascot Vale. All close to the city. Williamstown is very nice. Have a look at realestate.com.au and look around the area where the hospital is situate. There are a lot of good schools in the inner areas of Melbourne, private and public.
Good luck you are coming at the right time of the year as the warmer weather is with us now.
Hi and welcome to PIO and CONGRATULATIONS on the job offer, it seems like everything is moving very fast for you. Don't worry about coming over and not knowing anyone, we were exactly the same 4 years ago and are still here and loving it. I hadn't even been to Australia before. My youngest child is 7years and there is plenty for them to do, in fact it is hard getting a day when the children don't have anything on so we can all go out for the day, lol:)
If I can help at all please ask away.
One thing I would say is that make sure you buy your family a web cam if they don't already have one and set them up with skype, it has really been a life saver for us, and the children talk more to their grandparents than what they did when we lived down the road from them.
Big Hugs
Kate
Hi kate
am on a night shift and whilst its quiet i thought i could do some research thats when i came across this site. Glad i did!! The hospital is going to find us the acommodation for when we get there and once we know the area we can move i guess. Now the visa is just around the corner am starting to panick!!!!!!!!
You will be fine, honest!!! You are lucky in the respect that you have a job and accommodation, a lot of people who come over have nothing and it is a very stressful time for them.
This site is great and there are a lot of people on here who will help and guide you through, just don't be afraid to ask questions, a lot of people think that they can't ask a question because it may sound to silly, belive me there are no silly questions!!!
In regards to areas to live, I would recommend getting over here first and then having a drive around an get a feel for the areas you like and then start looking at schools.
