WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
We are just applying for our visa's - skilled independant visa's as husband is a joiner.
Its early days yet but at least we have started the ball rolling !!
We are looking to (hopefully) be leaving end of 2009 and our house is up for sale.
We have some credit card debt and the remains of bank loan debt, We are hoping that we will be able to get these paid off with the sale of our house. However, with the UK house market the way it is, it will depend on if we can sell our house at the asking price or if we will fall into negative equity (eeeeeek )
If this is the case we will have cut our loses and go ahead with our migration as we will have already spent the time, money and love on visa applications.
My main worry is that if i do have to leave any bad debt would this follow us to australia ? - Would bad credit affect our new life in Oz ? Affect us getting a bank account ?
What would they ask for when we arrived in OZ to open bank accounts or mortgage ?
Sorry i have waffaled a bit (!!) but its just a concern (hopefully it wont come to this )
Any Info would be appreaciated as we have just submitted the first payment and part to our visa application.
Hi
By what i've read on here it doesn't follow you and your credit rating starts from scratch once you are in Oz so any debt you have/had will not affect you getting a mortgage, bank account etc
Although i suppose you have to think about whether these debtors will harass the new tenants of your home/ family / ex employer etc and what would happen if you had to return to the UK
Hi and welcome to pio, we are sort of in the same boat, we are trying to clear off our debts b4 we go but i think there will be some left behind, as we are not going as soon as you we still got a few years b4 we hope to go so we hopefully will be able to pay off 99% of them.
I have heard that when u get to OZ it's a clean slate and u start afresh, but dont quote me on that lol.
Sorry i couldnt of been of more help, im sure someone will come along soon and give u the answers u want.
Good luck

Hi guys
We're the same - been mega overpaid by tax credits and there is no way we're going to be able to pay it off before we go! Where do we stand on this one?

No way can you escape money owed by just going to another Country
they all have agreements between Governments to stop people just leaving a Country with bad debts which is a criminal offence....make sure you are clean before you apply or you will never get in...and if you do the bad debts will come back to haunt you.
Not true Earlswood, i have frinds over there that have left a £20,000 debt in the UK and i also know someone there that left USA with about $50,000 of debt so i don't know how they got in but they did and are PR too

No chance.....goggle it...it is a criminal offence.
Debt avoidance fraud by emigrating Plus Oz and the UK HAVE AN extradition agreement in place, YOU COULD BE DRAGGED BACK. with phone and internet etc it would be silly to think that they wouldn't catch up with you http://www.emigrationexpert.co.uk/Ty...ouEmigrate.htm
Not saying there isn't a legislation in place just saying that you're wrong people don't get in because they do, whether they will get dragged back at some point i don't know about but my friends in Adelaide have been there for about 6 years now and have never heard a thing as far as i know x
