WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hi to everyone. Thanks for all the posts - this site has been invaluable to me in the last couple of weeks when trying to find out about moving to Australia.
Unlike a lot of you guys who have been trying to get to Aus for ages, my partner got offered a job in the Melbourne office out of the blue a few weeks back, and they are now looking to offer me a role also - if that happens we will be there in December. We are still in shock!
Would love to hear from anyone else who have moved to Melbourne recently and what they think of it.
Would also love to hear from anyone who has successfully moved their cat over - I have a 12 year old moggy who has been with me since he was 6 weeks old, and I don't think I could leave him behind, even though I am very worried about him on the journey. I've read all the cat posts, and they have helped to put my mind at rest.
first of all congrats on the chance to move down under.
We have been here for 13 months, and are really enjoying ourselves. We do live about an hour outside the CBD up in the Dandenongs, so our experiences are different to most people in the city or down the penninsula, but there are very few expats that dont like Melbourne.
Yes its a massive step, but if you go into it with your eyes open, and accept the aussie ways, you will definitely enjoy it.
December i a good time to move, weather is good, temperature not too hot, and Jan is the start of all the summer hols, so there is plenty giong on all the time.
Where abouts are you going to be working ? and have you looked at any areas yet ?
Good luck with everything, and any questions, just fire awau and ill try to help
We have been in Melbourne (near Lillydale) since Dec 07 and sorry to say I detest every moment of it. There are plenty of people who do like it but also a lot that don't.

Hi Karen,
Why do you detest Melbourne, Im getting worried, we are due to move out there very soon. What do you think the down sides are.
There is always going to be people that dont enjoy or settle in either Melbourne or Australia, and there are always thoses that go back.
I am a nember on quite a few expat forums (English & Dutch) and there is nearly always a "going back to the UK" section, but it is not that many who are leaving when you look at the amount that originally emigrate.
Those that dont settle, tend to hang around the forums, and those that do settle well, tend to dissappear off the forums and get on with their lives.
If you are worried by other peoples experiences, then you need to think carefully about your own reasons for moving, and are you personally strong enough to accept all the problems/stress/missing family & friends that you will experience in the first 12 months.. If you think you are, then you should be fine.
We did it 13 months ago, and love it. Love the country, love the people, love the way of life. Its what you make of it yourself is my opinion.
I may be biased but I think Melbourne is a wondeful place to live. It didn't win the 'worlds most liveable city' for nothing.
Melbourne is a vibrant, cultured, cosmopolitan city with lots going on all the time. There are great restaurants, arts, lots of festivals and events. It is the type of city you need to get to know to really appreciate it's many facets. The weather is good in my opinion. Yes, there are four distinct seasons but it is much better than UK weather and warmer in general.
If there are just the two of you I would choose to live close to the city so you can be in the most vibrant part of the city where there is always something going on. Port Melbourne is an example of a suburb which is only 5 km's from the city but next to the beach. There are bike paths and walking paths all around and a nice street (Bay Stree) cafes, shops etc. There is a new development called Beacon Cove which has lots of apartments, townhouses etc.

You are totally correct in the points you have made. I only asked as we did plan on Perth, but hubbies job happened to be in Melbourne, i must admit I have done quite a lot of research on Melbourne, and have so far found it to be up our street, Im just worried that I had the lets go blinkers on. I intend to give it one hell of a go because in my opinion it is an expensive fase to go through, thanks for your reply, some good points made. xx
