Picking brains...

Hi... we're planning to move out to Australia in about 4 years time (when children will be 16 and 11) - we reckon that will be good timing for the children with their education. But we can't decide where to go! We will be going as Investors, so looking for a job is not really a problem. The latest idea is Gosford - can anyone recommend it, or otherwise? We want a good climate, but not as hot as Perth, and a safe, relaxed, friendly lifestyle, and not too crowded (like everyone else!). If you have any other suggestions East Coast I would be glad to hear them! Thank you!

Sorry I cant help you but welcome to PIO anyway.

My son has just sat his GCSE's and my youngest is going to go into year 10 in Australia.

The GCSE's are not recognised in Australia and if you are holding out 4 years just for them then dont bother, unless of course you think you may come back.

Good luck with your research

Oo - thanks for replying! So will your son go to college in Australia, or is he hoping to get work? We were wondering whether to leave the January before my daughter is due to sit GCSEs and get her into Australian system for Year 10?

Hi, We are not too sure yet we think he will go back to school and do years 11 and 12, which he is quite happy to do, or he could go to TAFE. To be honest he is ok abt going back to school so that is what he will probably do, as I am not sure if we would have to pay full fees if he went to TAFE, not sure how that works still yet, but he would need to get some Australian Qualifications under his belt to be able to get a decent job.

I have spoken to a couple of the schools in Queensland and they say that Year 10 is a very good year to start in, as they then do year 11 and 12.

We are due in Australia in December this year, so the eldest has a nice break until then lol

Hello Londonderry

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

Have you thought about visas as yet? My only comment is this: the DIAC website and/or an Agent can only tell you about the visa requirements as they are today.

I've only been watching Aussie visas for 3 years, which is not long enough to get a good feel for how often they shuffle the cards with them, but they do seem to have done a surprising amount of card-shuffling in the last 3 years and are still at it now (though the change of Government in late 2007 was always bound to produce a fair amount of new legislation & new policies, including with Immigration.)

So query: would it be prudent to start the ball rolling on a visa application fairly soon, whilst you know what the current requirements would be, or do you take a chance on legislative changes that could happen before you are ready to apply and/or move? I don't have an answer or an opinion for you. I am merely wondering whether you have considered the question?

Most visas that confer Permanent Residency in Australia from Day One have to be validated by the act of Initial Entry to Oz within 12 months of the earlier of the dates of the police checks or the medicals, because each of those only have a 12 month shelf-life. A short rekky visit to Oz takes care of validating the visas but the whole family must validate their visas. It is not enough for the main visa holder alone to do so.

Once the visas are validated, you then have up to 5 years from the date of the grant of the visa in which to make the permanent move to Australia. However, with that idea - ie the possibility of waiting before making the permanent move - you have to consider the rules for Resident Return visas because the travel element of a PR visa is only valid for 5 years from the date of the grant:

Five Year Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155)

I think it can be quite a tricky conundrum. Also I am not sure how many of the Investor type/group of visas grant PR from Day One anyway? If you would be Provisional Residents to start with, as far as I know none of the above kicks in until your PR visas are granted.

Just thought I would bring the query to your attention to make sure that you are aware of the considerations that may be involved.

Best wishes

Gill

Many thanks, Gollywobbler! Very interesting to know. I will pass all this information to my husband for him to mull over! We spoke to an Advisor the other day and I think the idea is that we go in as Provisional Residents.

Best wishes.

Hi there,

I live in Gosford, this town (they call it a city!) has changed an awful lot in the last 10yrs or so, great shopping areas, beaches, lovely houses etc., Temperature wise it's great although this Winter has been one of the coldest in 13yrs and the longest for that matter! Roll on Spring.......

It would depend a lot on what type of investment you are interested in to be honest, an awful lot of people commute into Sydney for work which is 90mins each way, we both work on the Coast luckily so not a problem for us.

Having said all this, things could change considerably in another 4 yrs, who knows? A lot of Sydneysiders are moving up here to live now and all the Coasties seem to be moving further North themselves. We used to be like a country town, but not anymore although some people may disagree with me here, but I have lived here for 15yrs and have seen the changes happen and new development pop up all over the place.

Good luck in all you do.

Thanks so much for the information on Gosford, Jayne (I'm Jane!). We will certainly put it on the 'list' and do a reccy when we visit the East Coast.

Best wishes.
