The visa you can apply for depends on lots of things such as how old the main visa applicant is, whether their job is on the list of skills that Australia wants...have a look at immi.gov.au to get a feel for it all...you have to have a certain amount of points to qualify for each visa.
Underneath my signature, you'll see a "timeline" which shows how long everything takes, although some people get their visas fairly quickly and others have been waiting ages...so it's the luck of the draw in that respect I think!
Once you are granted your visa, you have 12 months to validate it from the date that you took your medicals and police checks (whichever was the earliest).
