Hi Leonards
We too are heading to Melbourne on a
PR visa in January 09. We were out there for a couple of weeks earlier this year. It depends really how far you are willing to commute and where to obviously. Mornington/Mount Martha/Torquay/Sorrento all beautiful places but for us needing to be able to get to the CBD just that bit too far. We looked at Werribee and liked the look of that. We think we will end up in the short term at least in Warrandyte. We are about to enrol our eldest (age 5) at Warrendyte primary.
Sanctuary Lakes is a beautiful new housing estate (sorry!!! but I thought it was just a big housing estate) and next to it is Point Cook although we found that a bit souless. But nearer to the city.
Lara was also commuteable but a bit too old fashioned for us, lots for your money but very spread out,

Geelong is another place that alot of people from here head to.
Are you planning a trip pre move? Not sure it made where to live in Victoria any easier for us.
Sorry to ramble on, not sure I answered your question really,
Best wishes
