Hi Eric, Gail, Neil
Very many thanks for this message.
My old machine is a case of R.I.P. I wouldn't have been satisfied if the tower unit had not been taken to bits, but that has been done and I am now sure that resuscitation is impossible. The power unit has mysteriously died for no apparent reason at all. My mate Frostie is an excellent electronic pathologist.
He happened to have a good, four-year old laptop going begging, so I've grabbed that for a very satisfactory price because it works on XP Pro, not the new Vista thing.
Waiting for a new Broadband disk to arrive. Apparently the machine won't recognise the modem without a disk. In the meanwhile, I've had to defeat Tiscali dial-up by masquerading as my sister in order to get the thing on line at all. Had the usual ferociously expensive and ferociously futile chat with Tech Support in India..... The Destructions which they provided were just that.
But we'll get there because this dial-up thing is useless. Bit by bit, when the new disk turns up.....
Cheers & thanks again
Gill
