WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
The missus and me are seriously considering making the move to Perth (I think I may have been brainwashed!!!!!!!!). We're in our 30's, have 2 kids & I work in the rail industry as a civil engineer / project manager.
It seems like the right time for us as the kids are young enough (2years and 10months), I've come to a bit of a crossroads in my career and the parents have just moved to the Scotland (+8hrs from where we live in York!). The missus has been to Perth before and has got close friends there. In short we would love to make the move before its too late!!
Thinking of letting the house out for a couple of years at least to see what happens with the housing market here. This in itself leaves to dilemmas in the fact that we won't have much in the way of savings, rental income will not quite meet the mortgage repayments etc. etc.
Got lots of questions which I don't really know where to start with at the moment (are there many rail many opportunities in Perth?, whats the first step in the immigration process that we should be taking?, agent recommendations, costs involved etc. etc.)
look forward to catching up and getting your advice,

Hi Paul and Kerry
We live in Stoke on Trent and have just started the process using an agent in Manchester. He's a sole agent so not as expensive as some of these companies that you get online.
My OH is a gas fitter/plumber so we are going on a skilled visa 175. Our agent said that we are better off trying the TRA route rather than the Vetasses (these are just the different forms).
Initially we were told it would cost around £3500 to get the visa. This included the agents fee, the medicals, police tests and the skill assessments and that was for all four of us. Weve now been told that if we take the TRA route we might not need a skill assessment just the paper assessment so fingers crossed, we might be saving a bit more money lol!
We are hoping to go to Perth as my OH has an aunty and cousins there although he doesn't know them as they have been over there 30+ years but I believe that Perth is a bit more laid back than Sydney or Melbourne as these tend to be a bit like London so Ive been told.
Keep in touch and lets try and follow each other through the process.
Sorry dont much about the rail industry so cant answer any questions about this.
Debbie
Hi Kerry and Paul. We too are just at the booking the agent stage. My oh is a brickie and we have 3 young kids. (11,9 and 3) I am using Thinking Australia as I've foung the advice excellent. My hubby has to use vetassess as thats the list hes on. Worth checking as the Practicals have to be booked in advance and can add extra time on to the whole process. Its costing us about £4000 all in. You'll find all the info you need on Department of Immigration and Citizenship. You can also check and see which assessing agency your ocupation is on. Hope this helps.
