WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Really depends on what your furniture is like. Ours was just cheap stuff so we didn't bother with some of it. Here in Melbourne you can get some good furniture for reasonable prices - Dandenong seems to be a hub for this.

We brought no furniture either, as ours was ruined by children and cats! If it had been in good nick would have probably been cheaper bringing it than to replace it though.

Wil be very interesting to see opinions on this subject as we too are not sure which way to go. I suppose you have to consider value of current furniture, cost of shipping, and cost of replacement. We also have quite a lot of furniture, some of it we will sell, this will assist funding new furniture of course, but we do have a few pieces that we just wouldn't sell. Reading some of the other threads about shipping costs, i think they vary greatly, some people are saying £1500 for a full container whereas my OH's sister is emigrating to new zealand later this year and has been quoted between £2500 and £3000 for half a container. Obviously these shipping containers come in various sizes, from 15 feet long upto 44 feet long, and then differences in height too. I think the cost is per square metre of space tho, and whilst it isnt cheap, you'd be suprised just how much 'stuff' you can get packed into an area.
Also heard, just as an off the cuff quote, a tea-chest sized box which is probably half a square metre would cost £50-ish to ship.
Hope this helps....

Buy it here. We left England and have sent a few boxes over with the personal effects. We have bought a 7 seater corner setee, 3 queen size bedroom suites, a washing machine, large fridge freezer, a real good computer, loads of kitchen stuff, all for around $8000. The crap we had in England would have come a couple of thousand pound. Spend 3000 pound shipping it over? I don't think so.
The quality of the stuff we have got is far better for the price than we would ever of got in England.
If your into brand names, cos it makes you feel good that you've got that brand, then fetch it over. But lets face it, all these brand names are made in the same factory as the cheap stuff anyway. We have never bought brand names and never had a problem with quality. I'm going to get slagged for this, but, we think people who buy because it's X brand are pretty shallow and like to think they are better than everyone else because they have their Next or what ever because they paid more for it.

Interesting thread...this is something we've been undecided on too..... on the one hand it might be nice to have a few familiar items around us, but on the other it's just stuff....and you can buy stuff anywhere...unlike personal possessions, like photo's and keepsakes which won't cost a fortune to ship
But my practical head says "yeah but you have a brand new king size bed" 2 fab HD lcd tv's that you saved hard for (bought before we made the decision to emigrate) and a lovely leather suite that is soooo comfy.
No idea how much it would cost us to replace for similar items over there.

Couldnt agree more tuckerfa,we are in the very very early stages of application and are already starting to either throw stuff out or sell, in fact i'm up at 5 in the morning to go do a carboot stall! Glad to hear replacement things are available at keen prices too. Only thing i definitely can't leave here is my PS3 haha. I guess its all about balancing pro's and con's, and deciding if the things you are considering taking ARE really worth it. Obviously everyone has personal things such as photo's, heirlooms possibly etc. We have a plan to get family to store some of our more sentimentally valuable items, then whenever we are visiting or vice versa, pop a few pieces in our cases each time. Tight ass i know, but look after the pennies and all that........
