demontrucker is on a distinguished road
Talking Hello everyone !

Hiya to anyone reading yet another newbie post!
I'm a 36 year old installation electrician just starting the apparently long-winded application process to emigrate to Oz from Ipswich,UK. Me, my OH and two young kids are hoping to be on our way sooner rather than later and have initially thought of heading towards Cairns in QLD. After reading quite a few of other posts/threads I'm getting a little concerned with the snakes and spiders references. Obviously I anticipated encountering such creatures in a warmer and more humid environment but I was under the impression it wasn't necessarily a 'daily' occurence?
Also, is anyone aware of the job situation in that area for a 'general electrician', and is a 'general electrician' comparable to a british 'electrician' i.e. housebashing/domestic installation work?
Any advice, replies etc will be incredibly appreciated.

Hi demontrucker & welcome to the forum,

Uuummmmmmmmmmm snakes & spiders well yes there are plenty & i guess you woudnt wanna hear some of the stories or see some of the things i have seen here in oz to do with spiders more than snakes. I could tell you some very true stories of what has happened to friends & neighbours here in oz but that just might scare the pants of ya from what you have written.
I have heard thou that Qld is the spider capital & due to the weather there there is more there than anywhere (but not sure how true this is)

To be honest i was the worlds biggest wooosey when it comes to snakes & spiders (i didnt even like hedghogs in the uk) & i have toughened up a bit, i think you have too,
& yes they can be a daily occurence when you find them indoors in the car on the wheelie bin & just chillin on the wall of ya porch.
all the best
stuju

I have never got used to the snakes but I do not mind the spiders. I have only seen one snake here in 20 years but have seen them in QLD and North Western Australian, also in UK I nearly stepped on an adder on the moorin Northumberland.

We had a holiday in Cairns recently and its a warm place and humid even in the winter. The beaches out of Cairns are lovely too. Pity about the crocs and the stingers.

You have get your A licence when you get there, you also have to pass something called ARTC. But look these things up now then don't worry about them till later on in your application. Just be aware of it.
As for Cairns, if there is work there for you then great, because it's an amazing and beautiful city.

Plenty of people will help you with any questions on here. Good luck.

Darren.
