Question Migrating to OZ

Hi everyone,

My family and I are right at the beginning of the process of migrating. Can anyone tell me the best place to settle, we are thinking about Melbourne but have never been to OZ before, so any recommended places would be appreciated. We are looking for good schools as my children are 5 and 13 and good job prospects in the IT market and PA/admin roles. We are looking for a more relaxed lifestyle, not too far from beaches or commuting time. Looking to rent to start then buy so any good housing areas not too expensive would be great.

Thanks everyone,
BushBaby

Hi BushBaby,

I migrated 9 years ago to Melbourne with a now ex-partner. I had the opportunity to go back to the UK when we broke up but didn't even consider it. I love it here - and last year became a citizen.

Some friends of ours decided to come to Melbourne after only seeing a colleague's holiday snaps!! They also love it.

Where I live, I'm probably 30 minutes drive from the beach, 10 mins to the Dandenongs (rainforest style countryside) and 40 mins to the city.

I've been contracting in IT since arriving in 1999, and have only been out of work for 2 weeks.

I can't comment on schools just yet, as my two are under two!

I had the fortune of being able to visit Melbourne several times before coming to live here. So the only advice I could offer is to have an 'exit strategy' - what will you do if you don't like it? Move back to the UK? Move to Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Cairns, New Zealand, etc, etc. They all have different climates which can also affect your decision!!

Above all you have to give it a go....6 months ...a year...to really know if you love it or not.

Cheers,

Hi BushBabe

I have only ever heard good things about Melbourne! I moved here from England last year and I love the Gold Coast but don't like the heat in Summer, nor its lack of a sense of history. My Aussie husband adores Melbourne (but apparently it's a bit pricey) but reckons he ought to take me down there to visit the place. He says there's just something about it that most everybody loves.
We're thinking of moving back to Blighty. However, if we do stay on here, we'd most likely move down that way, probably Ballarat.
Welcome to the forum!

Hi Bushbaby,

We are moving to Melbourne on 10th August, can't wait!! We are hoping to end up living in Berwick, which is about 45kms from Melbourne. From what I have researched, the schools are really good. I would guess you are 20 minutes drive to the beach but the commute by car to the CBD I have heard is a mare!! If that is where I end up working, I intend to use the train, which I think takes a little over an hour.

We did our reccie at the end of last year, and loved the place. If you get a chance, do visit first to make sure its right for you.

Good luck with it all

Dean
