Question Where to start?

Hello to everyone

My husband and I have for some time been thinking of mving to Oz (following trips to NSW & Q'Land in March 2004). We hope to work as Personnel Officer and Technical Manager (Mobile Telecommunications Networks) respectively, with me sitting the IELTS test.

The question is - where should we look at living? We found the tropical climate of Queensland very humid upon our visit but would not discount it for that reason alone. By the time we are able come to Oz we will have a young child, and also Mum (retired) will be following us..can anyone recommend a good place to think about living?

I would be grateful for any advice that anyne can offer. Is it best to start the process (once where we would like to live has been decided on) by applying to that state's government?

Many Thanks, K/

Hi Kirsty,

My understanding is that it should not matter which state you decide to move to. Some regional areas within each state may offer more 'points' depending upon which visa you'd be looking at.

Do you have any ideas upon the availability of jobs in each area you may be interested in?

Would you prefer to be in a warmer climate all year round (don't choose Melbourne then)?

Do you want a more relaxed lifestyle (Perth, Adelaide, QLD)? Do you want vibrant nightlife (Sydney/Melbourne)?

I'd write down the reasons you want to migrate and then try and map those to potential cities/areas. Wikipedia can be a great resource for finding out info about cities.

There's no reason why you couldn't go to Sydney for six months, and try it.....then try Brisbane.....then Melbourne.....etc.

If you don't go, you'll never know!

Cheers,

I think pin and map spring to mind, lol, choosing where to go is probably one of the hardest decisions you will make ,im not sure on the job front where youd be more in demand ,have you looked at SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site or AllJobs.com.au - Search for Jobs in Australia these may give you an idea. Also look at property prices on Real Estate | Homes for Sale | Houses for Sale | MLS Listings | REALTORs | Real Estate Agents - RealEstate.com as some citys are very expensive to buy in now adays. We choose Brisbane well 40 mins south west of the city ,in nearly 2 years i havnt had one day thats been unbearable and have used the air con only a few times ,we manage fine with ceiling fans as there always tends to be a nice breeze here ,although it can get hot in summer ,,but thats just a good excuse to jump in the pool though, lol, good luck with everything

Hi Kirsty, and welcome to PIO and good luck on your adventure downunder, how about getting the "Australia & New Zealand" magazine as well, coz that gives you profiles of families who have done the big move and info on cities all round Oz, as well as employment, visa agents etc? You will find yourself getting addicted to some of the sites advertised in there especially the real estate ones!
